院校简介西安大略大学又称韦仕敦大学(英语: University of Western Ontario or Western University)，是位于加拿大安大略省伦敦市的一所著名医学博士类公立大学，简称为UWO、Western或者Western Ontario。西安大略大学建立于1878年，建校初为宗教大学，由英国国教会建立，当时取名为Western University of London Ontario。至1908年完全世俗化并改为现名。它是加拿大U15及加拿大老四校成员之一。学校占地1120亩，泰晤士河从主校区穿过。西安大略大学共有12个学院，提供从学士到博士以及非学位项目的各种学科的课程，除此之外还有3个附属的大学学院。该校的理察•艾菲商学院 (Richard Ivey School of Business) 享有很高的国际声誉，是北美案例法教育的两大发源地之一。
历史沿革
The University of Western Ontario (known as Western) was founded in 1878 by Bishop Isaac Hellmuth of the Anglican Diocese of Huron. Three years later it opened its doors with four faculties – Arts, Divinity, Law and Medicine.
It was at Western where researchers led by Ivan Smith developed the world’s first ‘cobalt bomb’ to treat cancer in 1951, increasing the cure rate for cervical cancer to 75 per cent from 25 per cent.
The university has become a vibrant centre of learning. Through 12 faculties and three affiliated university colleges, Western today offers its 36,000-plus students more than 400 specializations, majors and minors.

  • Online Courses
    The University of Western Ontario's Distance Studies program is offered to both UWO students and those attending another Canadian school. Once the student obtains a letter of permission from his or her university and meets the course prerequisites, students are able to take a variety of courses spanning across plenty of faculties. The coursework is independently-based, with online lecture summaries provided by professors and often mandatory participation by students in online discussion boards. Papers are uploaded online manually, and students must take exams at registered testing centers in major cities. The Distance Studies program is great for independent, motivated workers, but students requiring more engagement in their learning experience should enroll in regular classroom sessions.

    • Joining a sorority or fraternity can be beneficial for networking opportunities before and after graduation.
    • Look for course books online before purchasing at the Book Store; they're often cheaper.
    • Make exercise a priority. With the delicious food served at residence cafeterias, it's easy to gain weight, so burn those calories right away!
    • No matter how hard you try to justify it, reading lecture slides at home is never as beneficial as going to class.
    • Participation often counts for a portion of your course grade, so speak up in class for easy marks.
    • Take advantage of the student events that are on campus every day. Speakers and information clinics are free and helpful!

    • After the first year, students must take between six and nine program-specific courses, depending on their degree structures, which allow for multiple electives and minor degree options.
    • Profession-specific clubs like the Pre-Law and Pre-Medical Societies offer deals on standardized-testing prep courses, along with great networking opportunities.
    • The Scholar's Electives program lets students who excelled in high school devise their own degree structure at Western. The program has an additional application process outside of the normal one to UWO, and Scholar's Electives is renowned for its flexibility in degree structures.
    • Affiliated schools of Western (King's, Huron, and Brescia University Colleges) provide intimate classroom sizes and specific programs, which all result in a degree from the University of Western Ontario.
    • Undergraduate session dates go from September until April, meaning a longer summer for all UWO students.
    • The Student Development Centre-located in the main student hub, the University Community Centre-is a great resource that provides free workshops on subjects like taking multiple-choice exams, writing essays, and constructing resumes.
    • Western's flexibility in courses allows program switches to occur with minimal hassle. Academic counselors are especially supportive in helping students transition to a different degree.
    • Western's Advanced Entry Opportunity (AEO) program is especially beneficial for aspiring business majors. The Richard Ivey School of Business is extremely competitive in acceptance and only admits students beginning in their third years. High school achievements can ensure admittance to Ivey by filling out the supplementary AEO application.
    • Western is a large school with approximately 30,000 students and 3,500 full-time staff and faculty members.

    • "B" grades for AP programs are the acceptance cut-off-so strive for that "A."
    • All faculties look at English marks, so keep it above 80%.
    • Apply to the AEO program for early admission to UWO's reputable Ivey School of Business.

As of November 2007, the University of Western Ontario has over 220,000 alumni residing in over 100 countries. Throughout Western's history, faculty, alumni, and former students have played prominent roles in many different fields and have won the Nobel Prize, Pulitzer Prize and other awards such as the Rhodes Scholarship. Former faculty member Frederick Banting received theNobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discovery of insulin. Alice Munro, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2013, studied in the university's English department for two years under a scholarship and was later awarded an honorary degree. Two graduates from Western have also traveled in space, namely Bjarni Tryggvason and Roberta Bondar.
Many former students have gained local and national prominence for serving in government, such as James Bartleman, who served asLieutenant Governor of Ontario from 2002 to 2007, and Sheila Copps who served as Deputy Prime Minister of Canada. Western's alumni also include a number of provincial premiers, including former premiers of Ontario John Robarts and David Peterson, and the former premier of Alberta, Don Getty. A number of graduates have also served prominent positions on the international level. Examples include Glenn Stevens, the Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia and Margaret Chan, the Director-General of the World Health Organization.
A significant number of prominent leaders in business and economics have also studied at Western. Examples include: François Bourguignon, Chief Economist, World Bank, Chris O'Neil, Country Head, Google Canada Inc, Jordan Banks, Global Head of Vertical Strategy, Facebook Inc., Stephen Poloz, Governor, Bank of Canada, Thomas H. Bailey, founder and former chairman of Janus Capital Group, Geoff Beattie, president of The Woodbridge Company and chairman of CTVglobemedia, George Cope, president and CEO of Bell Canada Enterprise, Edward Rogers III, deputy chairman of Rogers Communications, and former president of Rogers Cable, Arkadi Kuhlmann, chairman of ING Direct, Rob McEwen, chairman and CEO of US Gold Corporation, Minera Andes and the founder, chairman and former CEO of Goldcorp Inc., John Thompson, former chairman of Toronto-Dominion Bank and chancellor of Western, Prem Watsa, chairman, CEO of Fairfax Financial, Lee Seng Wee, former chairman ofOversea-Chinese Banking Corporation, Galen Weston, chairman and president of George Weston Limited, Howard Lindzon, author and founder ofStockTwits, and businesswoman Margaret Heng, CEO of Shatec, a Singapore-based hospitality training institution.,Kevin O'Leary, venture capitalist on the TV show Dragons' Den, co-host of CBC News Network's business news program The Lang and O'Leary Exchange and former president of The Learning Company. PrideWestern is a service organized by the University Students' Council that ensures a safe community for GLBT, while providing a strong voice on campus. The Tories Association is very prominent on campus, but perceptively liberal organizations such as PrideWestern hold a lot of prominence, as well.     "Party, party, party." That's the motto of students at Western. If you aren't at a bar, you're having a brew on campus. If you aren't having a brew, you're sharing a table with your friends at the library and studying for about 20 minutes total. Lifelong friendships are a milestone of the University experience, and UWO students take complete advantage of the social opportunities college brings.

Athletics at Western is managed by Sports & Recreation Services, a division of the Faculty of Health Sciences. The university's varsity teams compete in the Ontario University Athletics conference of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport. The varsity teams are known as the Western Ontario Mustangs. As is mandatory for all members of Canadian Interuniversity Sport, Western does not provide full-ride athletic scholarships.
The university has a number of athletic facilities open to both their varsity teams as well as to their students. TheWestern Student Recreation Centre is a state-of-the-art facility, which opened in January 2009 and is home to Western's group fitness, drop in recreation, registered massage therapy, sport psychology, drop in recreation, intramural sports and clubs.
Better known as the WSRC or the Rec Center, this facility has an 8-lane, 50-metre pool facility. This concrete pool with ceramic tile line is a chlorine gas, sediment base filter pool. Overlooking the pool is a 3-tiered concrete viewing area. A 1-metre diving board is also available in the facility. The pool has an accessibility lift, barrier free locker room entrance, exit for the women’s and men's locker rooms, and a gallery that includes seating space for wheelchair users. There is over 19,000 square feet of weight, cardio, and stretching space within the WSRC. Closest to the main entrance of the WSRC (which is actually the third floor) is the two-level weight and cardio space. There are also over 200 pieces of weight and cardio fitness equipment available for usage by members. Another amazing feature of the WSRC are the five gymnasia. There are three gyms on the first floor, and two more on the upper level. The three lower level gyms are an engineered sprung hardwood floor, 30×57 metres or 18,400 sq ft, while the two upper gyms are a poured athletic resilient floor for a greater multi-purpose use. Outside the lower gyms is the 1st floor games and activity lounge for table tennis, while outside of the upper gym spaces is additional cardio space as well as the destination for spin bike programming. Also located on the 4th are two large studio spaces where the drop in fitness, clubs and dance courses take place.
TD Waterhouse Stadium has been the main stadium of the university since it opened in 2000, with a seating capacity for over 8,000 spectators. The stadium is home to the university's varsity football team, and has hosted a number of events including the World Lacrosse Championships and the Canada Games. The Thompson Recreation & Athletic Centre which houses a number of athletic venues, including an ice rink, tennis facilities and a track, is home to the varsity ice hockey teams and the varsity track and field teams. Another athletic facility at the university is Alumni Hall, which is a multipurpose venue for sports such as basketball, volleyball and other indoor events.
Intramural sport leagues and tournaments have a high level of participation at Western. Opportunities are offered at multiple skill levels and across a variety of sports. Sports offered include traditional sports like volleyball, basketball and soccer, as well as less traditional events like dodgeball and inner tube water polo. Western also hosts secondary school football games at TD Waterhouse Stadium.

Students often have beer after class here. The Spoke sells a variety of foods, including pita wraps and nachos. Many group functions involving on-campus clubs also take place here.

    • Shinerama Day: As the most common fatal genetic disease in Canada, Shinerama is a campus-wide charity to find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis. Shinerama is the largest fundraiser by post-secondary institutions, and UWO loves to play a large role in this commendable initiative. The event takes place in September, and it's always a positive way to start the new school year!
    • St. Patrick's Day: Since students essentially run London's nightlife, St. Patrick's Day is a particularly wild day. Keggers-pancakes included-are guaranteed to start early in the student ghetto, followed by popular pub crawls for thousands of people. Classes are virtually abandoned for St. Pat's; it's a University staple that everyone participates in.
    • Terry Fox Campaign: Every September, Western encourages its students to participate in the Terry Fox Run to raise money for cancer research. With one of the largest post-secondary runs in Canada, UWO often contributes a significant portion of funds to the Terry Fox Foundation.

    • If you're flying out of the Toronto or Detroit airport, the Aboutown Airport Shuttle is an easy, convenient option. With reasonable prices and an enjoyable ride, they're a great company to go with.
    • Taxis to the London airport are the most popular way to get to and from the location. Depending on where you're leaving, the cab will cost between $25 and $30. If you leave from a specific location, there will often be a fixed rate. Be sure to take London Taxi to the airport, seeing as there is a student discount.
    • The Robert Q Airbus provides transportation to and from the Toronto and Detroit airports. The company offers shuttles every couple of hours and leaves from a convenient location.

    Mid-January is the ideal time to begin house-hunting. Generally, landlords won't post listings prior to that time, and you'll have first dibs on all student housing available.

    • Downtown London is located in close proximity to the Richmond Row bar area. It's about a 15-minute bus ride from campus, and public transit frequently passes by the area to take you to Western with ease.
    • Houses along Western Road are on the Northern side of campus and far away from downtown. These homes are within walking distance of the University and cater towards larger groups of people (generally four to five). However, they're particularly spacious in comparison to off-campus housing in the downtown region.
    • If you're looking for convenience to campus, the student ghetto is for you. As an area of student houses on the Southern perimeter of campus, the student ghetto is as close to the University as you can get. Houses range in quality and price in this region.
    • The Old North is the halfway mark between Richmond Row and the University. The homes are older but large, and the location is convenient for both social and academic aims.

    • Black Fly Coolers: Located in the heart of downtown London, Black Fly Beverage Company is Ontario's first micro-distillery. Black Fly coolers can be purchased at LCBO (Liquor Control Board of Ontario) liquor stores around Ontario and come in interesting flavors like strawberry rhubarb and black currant blueberry.
    • Ceeps Platter: The Ceeps has a beer special on Saturdays that's a staple for a genuine Western student experience. Patrons get a platter of 25 beers for $50, with the infamous Ceeps brew. It's a fun novelty to share with friends on a wild night!

    Lavish is known to attract members of the GLBT community. As a reputable gay club (especially on Saturday nights), Lavish capitalizes upon its inclusive environment with a massive dance floor and fun music. It's a dressier venue with distinct areas for dancing and socializing.

  • The London Tap House

    The London Tap House is hit or miss among Western students. There's a huge dance area that plays regular Top 40 songs, but it often becomes cramped as the night progresses, due to circulation issues. Students have free cover on Thursdays, just by showing their Western ONECard, which helps alleviate the cost of this generally pricey venue. Tap House has a strict dress code and is considered to be one of the classier clubs in London.

  • Up on Carling

    By spinning house and hip-hop music, Up on Carling offers music alternatives to the regular Top 40 hits of other clubs. The club's dress code coincides with an emphasis on VIP service, which includes limousine pickups and a private escalator entrance to the venue. With lots of space for dancing, plus a wine room and a patio, there are many places to keep occupied at Up on Carling. Since it's located further down the main hub of Richmond Row, it can sometimes attract a crowd outside of Western students.

  • Club Rouge

    Newly opened in 2010, Club Rouge offers a massive space for students looking for a dressy night out. The venue was originally a strip club prior to its recent renovations, and one of the stripper poles remains in the bar for people to dance on. With a heavy emphasis on bottle service through its extensive VIP section, the club is pretty expensive for typical student budgets. Rouge's most popular night is Thursday, where hour-long lines begin for those who get there past 10:30 p.m. DJs vary from night to night, but there is a general favoritism towards Top 40 remixes.

  • 29 Park

    29 Park is located about two blocks off of the Richmond Row hustle, and it may not be worth the travel. A few years ago, 29 Park was the club to be at, but now with the opening of new clubs, it has gone downhill in popularity. 29 Park generally plays Top 40 remixes and other techno hits that encourage the use of its dance floor. The venue is spacious, and many campus group events will rent out 29 Park for semi-formals.

  • The Barking Frog

    Without a doubt, the Barking Frog is UWO's top choice for an upscale bar night. The Frog has four separate rooms (each with a bar) and a large dance floor that always plays top hits. The club always features drink specials, dependent on the night, and attracts a Western-heavy crowd almost every night of the week. The Barking Frog also has a massive patio that's popular in the summertime and also heated in the colder months.

  • Club Mansion

    Club Mansion has risen to be one of the most popular clubs among Western students. With a strict dress code, Mansion offers a true club experience. The club accents its special events section and is a great spot for getting bottle service with your friends. There is also a massive dance floor with consistently great tracks. For a classy night on the town with your buddies, Mansion is definitely the place to be.

  • Molly Bloom's Irish Pub

    Molly Bloom's is a rowdy pub that often features live music. The bar is especially busy on Saturdays and, of course, St. Patrick's Day. With an older crowd and lots of seating areas, it's a great place to go for a casual night with your buddies. Molly's also holds karaoke nights on Mondays.

  • Joe Kool's

    Generally attracting an adult crowd, Joe Kool's has slowly been gaining popularity among students for the past few years. On weekends, the bar is known to have a long line. As a plus to your Joe Kool's experience, there are some great live music acts!

  • Winks Eatery

    Winks' name is deceptive. Although the venue holds an awesome, cheap breakfast and a great menu, it's also a happening pub at night. Sunday karaoke nights and tons of television screens make Winks a nice alternative to a typical club.

  • The Runt Club

    This gem of a club is a great place for watching sports games. The Runt Club is tucked away on Albert Street and generally attracts an older crowd. The bar is cozy and located inside of what was most likely an old house. Predominantly playing classic rock and alternative music, the Runt Club is a great destination for a casual date or a chill night sharing a pitcher with your friends. The place also has a popcorn machine going all night! Who doesn't love free snacks?

  • Jim Bob Ray's

    Affectionately nicknamed as "Rim Job's" by students, JBR's is a relatively seedy venue where Western kids go for a sloppy night. Jim Bob Ray's is known for attracting a younger crowd, many of whom can often be found dancing on a pole on stage or on one of the many tables scattered around the bar. The bar plays a conglomeration of hip-hop and Top 40.

  • Call the Office

    Operating since the late 1860s, Call the Office is the best place to catch up-and-coming indie bands perform live. As one of the few places in London that reputably attracts a hipster crowd, preppy Western students will seldom be found at Call the Office. Many underground bands stop at CTO while touring between Detroit and Toronto. Indie music fans will love Call the Office's intimate venue, which allows for interactions with musicians before and after the show. Along with its affordable drinks, Call the Office is a great spot for students who want a break from the Western bubble.

  • Barney's

    On the first sunny day of April, it's a sure bet that UWO students are heading to Barney's. As an affiliate bar of the Ceeps, Barney's offers a massive patio with many drink specials. The venue is the ultimate celebrator of the summer months, and it usually starts filling up around 3 p.m. The patio bar plays Top 40 music in the background, but real noise comes from socializing with the multitude of students basking in the sunshine.

  • Jack's

    Jack's is one of the most popular bars among Western students. With nights like Tequila Tuesday and infamous Monday Funday night, Jack's always offers great specials with drinks costing around $2. The place is jam-packed on busy nights and often has a line starting around 10 p.m. Jack's is a casual atmosphere that offers a rowdy dance floor and a relaxed upstairs with live music, to bring patrons the best of both worlds.

    As London's only country bar, Cowboys attracts a variety of people. The venue is massive and is often the destination for bachelorette and birthday parties. With a mechanical bull for a country western feel, Cowboys is known for balancing both country and Top 40 hits.
