Although UC Berkeley's Career Center is relatively far from campus, it offers many services to help students with their futures. For those too lazy to schedule an interview with the Center, the website offers many job listings, along with information about upcoming career fairs. Programs such as UCDC, Cal-in-the-Capital, and Cal-in-Sacramento also make it easy for students to intern over the summer in Washington, DC or Sacramento. Many departments have mailing lists that update students on internship opportunities in the area that are applicable to that major. Berkeley's proximity to San Francisco also makes it easy for Cal students to get part-time internships in the City. While UC Berkeley is impressive to employers everywhere, San Francisco employers are especially excited by the name because Cal is by far the best school in the area (Stanford isn't as accessible from San Francisco).

The LGBT community is very active and visible on campus. The Unity House dorm option supports diverse genders and sexualities, and the Queer Resource Center hosts many events to support LGBT students. Like anywhere else in the Bay Area, it's hard to find anyone who would speak out against gay rights or lifestyles.
While students tend to be more liberal, most students enjoy political debate. The Berkeley College Republicans are consistently the largest student group on campus. Many students strive to continue the tradition of radicalism started by the Free Speech Movement, and it is not uncommon to watch student protests on Upper Sproul.
Berkeley attracts students from every economic class. While there are a lot of rich Southern California students, Cal also has a sizeable population on financial aid-UC Berkeley has more Pell Grant scholars than the entire Ivy League system.
Atheism and agnosticism are very popular, and many students are spiritual without being religious. Many students are Christian, Muslim, or Jewish. There are several Christian clubs, and Hillel is less than a block from campus.
There is high visibility and participation of minority organizations at Cal. The most active on Sproul Plaza are Asian organizations, minority business organizations, Christian and other religious groups, and ethnic volunteer organizations. The Gender Equity Resource Center is also very active, hosting classes that explore gender and events such as the Vagina Monologues.

While some students are definitely outgoing, the campus tends to be more relaxed. Strangers can have extended conversations with one another, and everyone has an opinion about everything. It is common to see groups of friends sitting on the grass, talking, sometimes with cigarettes or a guitar.
Hookups are most prevalent, but casual relationships are not uncommon. Many students don't have time for a serious relationship and choose to date people who live outside of Berkeley.
Students tend to think about school and work during the day, so it's not until going out with friends that they engage with new people. Most of the time, this is at the local bars, parties, or through other friends. Some students meet during class, but this rarely develops into anything more than flirting.
American Apparel and Urban Outfitters are the two popular stores near campus. Most people enjoy the indie look, with mismatched colors, flowing fabrics, and skinny jeans. Still, a lot also prefer T-shirts, jeans, and flip-flops, or work-out clothes. Most girls don't wear makeup, and many don't style-or brush-their hair.

    Gymnastics (men's), softball, tennis (women's)
Cal spirit is really impressive during football season, but seems to disappear until Cal Day in the Spring. Students always show up to the football games decked out and blue and gold-if you show up in anything red (even a thin red trim to a navy hat), the crowd will yell at you to take it off. If you don't, they will. During the season, the school often has small rallies in which the band plays either on campus or on the streets nearby. For Big Game Week, Cal goes all out with a week of "Go Bears" activities, and hundreds of students drive to Stanford whenever the game is away.
Freshmen who sign up early can get tickets for free but still need to pay about $30 for the important games, such as when the opponent is Stanford, USC, or UCLA. All of the students sit in the Student Section, and these tickets can only be purchased as season tickets. If you don't want to spend the $180, buy regular single-game tickets and have a friend sneak you into the student section.

    • Tight: Cool, great, perfect. ("That move you did on the dance floor was tight.")
    • Trashed, wasted, hammered, sloshed, obliterated, messed up: Drunk, high, or combination thereof.
    • Whack: Unfair, unfortunate, usually used in describing a minor injustice. ("The way your boyfriend broke up with you was whack.")
    • Big "C": The Big "C" visible in the hills above campus-normally gold-is often painted by student groups or opposing schools. Toward the end of school, it is painted white by the senior class. It has also been pink, blue, and camouflage-print, and is often painted red as a prank by Stanford students. Whenever the C is painted, however, students from the UC Rally Committee repaint it gold.
    • Cal vs. Stanford Football Game, a.k.a. "The Big Game" : This is the pinnacle of our sports year. The axe is the prize for the victor of this monumental annual game pitting the Cal football team against its cross-town rival, Stanford. The antagonism between Cal and Stanford has gone on for a century and continues to be one of the strongest signs of our school spirit to this day. Stanford is the most despised school among Cal fans, and the Big Game during football season is one of the only times we get to show them just how nasty we can get. The stadium, Stanford's or Cal's depending on the year, is always packed with students, family, and alumni-ranging from the class of 1956, to current students-sporting shirts, hats, and flags of gold, blue, and crimson. And be careful-don't get caught wearing red (Stanford's color) the week of the Big Game, or you might get pointed out on campus, told by roaming Rally Committee members and athletes to "take off that red," and hassled until you do.
    • Card Stunt: Each football game, a stack of colored cards is placed below each seat in the Student Section of the stadium. During halftime, the Mic Man yells which colors for students to show, and the entire section creates a series of pictures that support a Cal win.
    • Football Pre and After-Parties on Frat Row: The frats start drinking before noon on football game days, and they usually continue the festivities deep into the night with live music, dancing, and free alcohol. You can find at least one frat having a huge post-game party, and you'll most definitely find lots of drunk Greek scenesters roaming the local bars on those nights, too.
    • Homecoming and Parent Weekend: This is within the first few months of school and is usually when the Cal parents and alumni show up to either relive their college years or just check in with their kids. There are games, food, events, lectures, exhibits, tours, and lots of people all over campus who are all smiles for Cal. It's a good time to remind yourself of how lucky you are to be a Berkeley student.
    • Oski: This is the official mascot of UC Berkeley. This big, friendly golden bear wears a college letterman's sweater and is often seen at athletic games and other special events on campus. He's an undercover party animal and can be seen pouring and downing beers at the Bear's Lair Brewpub from time to time.
    • A parking lot was built exclusively for Nobel Laureates.
    • People lived in the trees for more than a year to protest a new athletic facility. This is actually true, except that for the first year or so, they were not residing in the trees, but instead sitting in them in shifts.
    • Sather Gate could fall down in the event of a major earthquake.
    • The brownies at the Dining Commons are laced with marijuana.
    • Two students committed suicide by jumping off the top floors in Evans Hall one year, leaving it with a curse.
Play Frisbee on Memorial Glade, go to the top of the Campanile, and listen to a concert at noon or 6 p.m. You can attend an outdoor concert at the Greek Theatre, watch an a cappella show at Sather Gate, read in a comfy place like Morrison Reading Room, watch a classic film from the Pacific Film Archive or Media Resource Library, play Frisbee or just relax in the Memorial Glade, hear an afternoon concert in Morrison Hall, see an art exhibit at the Berkeley Art Museum, or see archaeological artifacts in the Kroeber Hall Museum of Anthropology.
There are more than 700 approved organizations on campus, with new groups every semester. If you have a specific interest, from fencing to physics, there's most likely a group for you. If not, you can start one with enough time and effort.

  • Best Ways to Get to the Airport
    • A cab ride to Oakland International costs $30-$40; to San Francisco International, $60-$70.
    • BART to Airports Using BART and transferring to a local bus is the cheapest and easiest option, if you don't have a lot to carry. Oakland Airport by BART: catch the Richmond-Fremont line in the Fremont direction and get off at Coliseum. Take an Air-BART shuttle to the Oakland Airport (these leave every 15 minutes and cost $2). Buy your ticket in the station before boarding the bus (runs Monday-Saturday, 6 a.m.-11:50 p.m.; Sunday, 8:30 a.m.-11:50 p.m.). You can also take AC Transit bus #58 from the Coliseum BART to the airport (runs daily, every 20-30 minutes from 5 a.m.-12 a.m. and hourly, 12 a.m.-5 a.m.). SFO by BART: an extension has just been constructed to take you directly to SFO via BART. Get on the Daly City train at the Downtown Berkeley station, transfer at Balboa Park onto the SFO train. One-way costs about $6.
    • BayPorter Express shuttles pick you up at your doorstep and run to both OAK and SFO (www.bayporter.com; $19 one-way or $32 round-trip; (877) 467-1800).
    • City Express Shuttle serves Oakland and San Francisco and offer student discounts.
    • Luxor services the Oakland airport ($15 with student discount, 7 a.m.- 10 p.m.).

Club Listings
  • Shattuck Downlow

Shattuck Downlow is probably the only real club in Berkeley; every night has a particular theme ranging from salsa, to karaoke, to hip hop. Most patrons are older and not UCB students. The bar and club are actually pretty swank, with plush couches and subtle lighting, but the Downlow has yet to escape its cheesy reputation.

    2284 Shattuck Ave.

    (510) 548-1159

  • Whisper Lounge

San Francisco's premiere up-scale dance lounge for 18-and-over. The lounge provides electronic dance music in a unique multi-level venue.

    535 Florida St.

  • Ashkenaz Music and Dance Center

Ashkenaz is a popular dance club and show venue, featuring music and artists of Balkan, Blues, Cajun/Zydeco, Middle Eastern, African, Caribbean, and Reggae persuasion. Ashkenaz is family/child friendly.

    1317 San Pablo Ave.

  • City Nights

An 18-and-over San Francisco club, City Nights is one of the few clubbing options. The club generally plays hip hop, Top 40, and dance music, and is only open Saturdays, 9:30 p.m. until 2:30 a.m.

  • Henry's Publick House & Grille

Henry's attracts an older crowd on most nights, but at around 9 p.m. on Tuesdays, it transforms into a sweaty, crowded meat market. Their infamous "Two for Tuesdays" drink specials aren't so special once you take a look at the size of their cocktails, but it's still fun to think you've drank six long islands instead of three.

    2600 Durant Ave.

    (510) 845-8981

  • Kip's

The favorite for late-night (if you can call 1:30 a.m. late night) drinkers, Kip's is where everyone ends up when all the other bars close. Drinks are cheap, girls look cheaper, and everyone is having a good, drunk ole time.

    2439 Durant Ave.

    (510) 848-4340

  • Raleigh's

Most people will say that Raleigh's has the least obnoxious and most laid-back scene out of all thebars, but it closes at midnight (sorry night owls)

    2438 Telegraph Ave.

    (510) 848-8652

  • The Bear's Lair Pub

The Bear's Lair attracts a wide variety of students with its cheap drink specials and event nights. On most weekend nights, you'll find athletes, Greek scenesters, and groups of students and adults just hanging out.

    2475 Bancroft Way

    (510) 843-5247

  • Beckett's

By far the most popular reason students attend this dark Irish pub is Trivia Tuesdays, the weekly trivia competition that begins at 10 p.m.

    2271 Shattuck Ave.

    (510) 647-1790

  • Blakes on Telegraph

Attempting at a little more style than the other bars, Blakes is a tri-level bar and dance club that has drinks on the second and third levels and live music in the basement. The clientele is diverse, ranging from Berkeley townies to underage lushes.

    2367 Telegraph Ave.

    (510) 848-0886

  • Paragon

This bar and jazz lounge was built for the ritzy Claremont crowd but is also open to the public. With comfortable furniture and sexy, dark lighting, it doesn't feel tacky and immature like most other places that welcome 18-year-olds.
