如何让PS变得特别、有创意、有意义?

问题:

Is making the PS special and creative meaningful?

My PS only included some basic infomation such as my courses and my career plan. I have read some PS samples that seem like they are telling interesting stories, but I cannot dig out some good stories about myself.

回答:

Firstly, be careful. “Creative” and “special” often lead people down the wrong path in search of some profundity or effervescence that, to be frank, doesn’t interest the admission committee and isn’t particularly productive for you!

Identify what the program wants, identify suitable stories, THEN start writing about them.

Write in SPECIFIC and concrete terms. Evaluate what happened and why it was valuable.

So, to summarize: Use specific, concrete details to convey relevant information about your suitability and scope for success.

SOME ELABORATION:

Stories should have an angle; that angle should be, implicitly, your suitability for the program. So analyze what the program wants, and then identify events that illustrate and affirm your suitability. Perhaps we should unpack the concept “suitability”?

Choose stories that ultimately demonstrate why and how you’ve equipped yourself to be [[ a success on the the program, and a success beyond (having completed the program) ]].

Stories are how you distinguish yourself. Their particularities and specificities are what will make your statement “unique”. Even the most apparently mundane and ordinary details that chronicle an experience can be both interesting, and—quite literally—unique. They happened to you. No-one else. So pick something recent, something that you can convey with confidence.

FINALLY:

It takes work. It won’t flow out of your mind like a miracle. But every person is interesting, every person is capable of doing this.
