  • 8
The location in Washington, D.C., America's thriving capital
  • 9
    Brilliant and accessible professors
  • 10
The entirely student-run The Corp, credit union, and orientation programs
Worst Of
  • 1
The meal system at Georgetown is monopolistic, and the buffet-style food does not compensate for losing all unused meals at the end of the week.
  • 2
Georgetown is in D.C., so it does not receive any funding from a state government. This, along with it being an elite private university, leads to a high tuition cost.
  • 3
There is a wide variety in the types of dorms available, meaning some are far nicer than others and a clear inequity is present among the different living situations.
  • 4
Georgetown has a smaller football stadium than most high schools, so the excitement surrounding America's favorite sport tends to be minimal.
  • 5
The neighbors have prevented a Metro stop from being built in Georgetown, so getting into D.C. can take 20 to 40 minutes.
  • 6
Georgetown only recently started building an endowment, so it is much lower than that of other schools of similar reputation and stature.
  • 7
Sometimes, rats can run outside at night.
  • 8
The wealthy students on campus can seem to have a dominating presence and take away from the diversity.
  • 9
The gym is owned by a separate company, but students are mandatory members, so few renovations or perks are provided.
  • 10
The school is known for its grade deflation, which gives students less competitive GPAs.

The campus is accepting of LGBTQ students, providing on-campus support groups such as LEAD (Leaders in Education About Diversity). This is done through the Center for Social Justice, an entire department dedicated to promoting diversity and tolerance. Georgetown has hired homosexual staff members to work through this center. Yet, the sizable gay community is relatively quiet.
Since Georgetown is located in Washington, D.C., it is a very politically active and vocal university. There are often demonstrations on recent issues in Red Square. Although it is a Catholic university, Georgetown's campus is pretty liberal. Even the Jesuits often take a liberal stance, especially on social issues. Students take active roles in campaigns and notable politicians and political figures are on campus to speak seemingly weekly.
The economic background on campus is very mixed. However, being one of the most expensive schools in the country, Georgetown tends to draw a lot of students from wealthy families.
Since Georgetown is a Jesuit campus, the most prevalent religion on campus is Catholicism, but it is closely followed by other Christian religions. Georgetown also has strong contingencies of Jewish and Muslim students. It either offers services or provides students with ways to attend services for all religious preferences. If it doesn't, they will work to accommodate any expressed religious needs.
There are many minority clubs, from the African Society of Georgetown to the Taiwanese American Student Association.
  • Did You Know?
Georgetown was the first ever university to hire a full-time Muslim chaplain.

Georgetown's Jesuit identity prevents the sale of both birth control and condoms on campus. The closest place to get them is CVS on Wisconsin Avenue. Furthermore, Georgetown's pro-choice abortion group, H*yas for Choice, is not a recognized group on campus.

Georgetown students definitely embody the work hard/play hard mentality. During the week, students study vigorously and focus on their schoolwork, and the social scene is kept pretty quiet. However, the social scene really picks up on the weekends, when several parties are hosted each night. With local parties, clubs, and bars, Georgetown students keep themselves busy all weekend long.
Like most universities, large numbers of Georgetown students go out weekend after weekend looking for random hookups and one-night stands. This is especially noticeable among the younger grades, when the new college student feels the need to live up to college stereotypes. However, there are sizable groups among the singles' pool with interest in dating; the trick is finding someone else who feels the same.
Georgetown students have the awful reputation of being typical preppy college students-clones wearing flipped collars and Rainbow flip-flops. However, in recent years, students have ventured away from this image toward more unique and fashion-forward styles. Guys are still often seen around campus in polo shirts and Madras plaid shorts, yet more guys are beginning to wear more casual jeans and T-shirts. Girls' clothing has much more variety; girls are now seen wearing more chic clothes like skinny jeans and a flowy top than the typical preppy attire. Almost everyone wears sandals or UGG boots.

Men's basketball is by far the most popular sport on campus. Most students purchase student tickets, and games become huge social outings throughout the winter months. The men's lacrosse team is also pretty popular because of its success, but it is not as well-known as basketball.
  • Most Overlooked Teams
Crew is one of the most overlooked teams on campus. Its athletes make up a large number of students on campus, boasting three teams: men's heavyweight, men's lightweight, and women's. The crew team is usually one of the highest-ranked teams in the nation, and races are enjoyable to watch when they use the Potomac.
Georgetown students are very proud of the Hoya tradition and of their school in general. They are diehard basketball fans, and some students even travel with the team, and they also work hard to support other sports teams. However, school spirit in general is very prevalent on campus-not only in sports games, but also in all facets of life. Georgetown students carry the Georgetown mentality with them wherever they go.
Tickets are only required for basketball games; all others are free for Georgetown students. Students are emailed by the Hoya Hoop Club before the season starts, asking whether they are interested in purchasing tickets. Tickets cost about $125 and include season tickets to all men's and women's home games. Tickets may also be purchased individually at the door, but most students go for season tickets.
The waterfront is a few blocks from campus and is the perfect place to take a date: dinner, a movie, and a romantic moon-lit walk by the Potomac. Also, taking a walk through the immediate area around Georgetown, one can find some of the most beautiful houses in D.C.
  • Did You Know?
Georgetown is a Division I school in almost every sport.

With the hundreds of restaurants in the Georgetown area, students much prefer to go off campus and eat than to stay on campus. Another popular option is to stock up on pantry foods at Safeway and make your own dinner, especially if you live in an apartment that has a full kitchen. It's a bit more difficult in typical dorms, but it can be done. Favorites are macaroni and cheese or plain pasta. Some students even cook their own steaks in the common room.

    • GUGS: Georgetown University Grilling Society. They make one-of-a-kind, must-have burgers for which students eat up for hours every Friday afternoon.
    • ICC : Bunn Intercultural Center (the big red building with the solar panels on it). It houses most history, language, and philosophy classes.
    • MSB : McDonough School of Business
    • NHS : School of Nursing & Health Studies
    • SFS: School of Foreign Service
    • Georgetown Day: Georgetown Day is the annual University-wide celebration that takes place at the end of the spring semester.
    • Good Basketball: Georgetown is known for its stellar basketball teams year after year.
    • Jack the Bulldog : Jack is a live bulldog that lives full time on campus. He is cared for by one of the Jesuits, as well as a team of students trained as official walkers. Jack goes to all home men's basketball games and entertains the crowd by tearing into a box with the opposing team's logo. Jack also makes appearances at other campus events.
    • Singing the fight song : Georgetown students learn the fight song immediately. That is, they learn the song at special accepted students' weekends before they have even committed to going to Georgetown. The fight song is sung everywhere-it is not only heard at sports games, but also at formal events. First-years who attend the freshman retreat even sing it in a dark cave in the middle of a forest.
    • Sitting on John Carroll's lap: You will often find students sitting in the lap of the John Carroll statue.
    • A network of underground tunnels connects Copley Crypt with several of the other old buildings on campus.
    • If you step on the Georgetown seal outside of Healy Hall as an undergraduate, you will not graduate.
    • Jack the Bulldog was originally adopted as a mascot due to the good luck he once brought to the Georgetown football team. According to rumor, the team won every game that season except for one; that is, they lost the one at which Jack was not present. The University had no choice but to hire him as a good-luck charm.
    • The fifth floor of the Healy building is no longer accessible because of the exorcism that was performed there, on which Georgetown alumnus William Peter Blatty based his novel and screenplay, "The Exorcist." Most often, the legend has the exorcism being performed by Fr. Thomas King, S.J. When asked whether there was any truth to the rumor that he had once performed an exorcism, he responded only, "Why? Do you need one?"
Georgetown students love to stay very active. They do anything and everything in their free time, from working out at Yates to playing pick-up games of soccer or Frisbee. Some students even like to set up their own volleyball net on Copley lawn and play. Otherwise, students enjoy catching the current play on campus, watching the free movies on the weekends, or attending one of the lectures by the hundreds of awesome speakers who visit Georgetown each year. There is never a shortage of fun things to do on campus.
