  • 在去学校之前应该知道的事情
    • Get football tickets. You will be sorry if you don't.
    • Having a car certainly is not necessary, but it does help in finding a job, grocery shopping and getaway trips.
    • There is always a construction project somewhere on campus.
    • Tuition will rise every single year.
  • 访谈与信息会话
Contact the Office of Admissions. The easiest way is to log onto the Web site (www.psu.edu/dept/admissions/visits/visitu), as it provides a full University calendar and allows you to register. For help or any other information, contact the Admissions Office in 201 Shields Building at (814) 865-5471. Penn State typically does not require an interview for prospective students. A visitation will include a campus tour and group information session. After that, it is your responsibility to make contact with the departments of your choice to schedule appointments with an adviser.
  • 校园旅行
The Lion Scouts is a group of more than 300 volunteer students which aid the Undergraduate Admissions Office with campus tours and information sessions. These students know the campus well and are very knowledgeable tour guides. Campus visits usually consist of an hour-long information session in the Shields Building, before being led on an intimate tour through Penn State.

  • 同志骄傲大游行
Homosexuality can be a sensitive issue at any campus. Through such organizations as Allies and the USG Department of LGBTA Affairs, the gay community actively participates and often spearheads debates and events promoting acceptance, understanding, and safe sex. The Valentine's Day KissOut on the Old Main steps generates a lot of attention each year.
  • 政治活动
Campus has a more liberal leaning, but that doesn’t mean other groups don’t voice their opinions as well. When a social issue becomes particularly heated, there are often rallies and protestors representing all sides. The steps of Old Main and the end of the mall on College Avenue are the most popular places to find student activists.
  • 最寻常的地区
The Pasquerilla Spiritual Center is the largest multi-faith structure of its kind in the country. There are 42 student-run religious organizations on campus. Christianity is the most popular religion, but there are many opportunities for students of a different faith to become involved.
  • 校园内的少数俱乐部
Penn State has about 50 minority clubs and student organizations run by and directed to students of many different cultures and nationalities. These clubs sponsor different events across campus and sometimes become highly visible in local media; a good example is the Black Caucus, which frequently makes news as it strives for racial equality on campus.

  • 社会科学
Most students quickly find their own social niche on campus, whether it's partying downtown four nights a week, or spending the weekend at the game fairs in the HUB. The majority of the students seem to prefer the former. Though the HUB is packed on weekends and the free movies can be difficult to get into at times, the downtown scene, frats, and apartment parties are more popular. Penn State is a party school, and students largely turn to drinking for their entertainment.
  • 同盟或者恋爱关系
Relationships have been known to happen on campus, of course, but on the average Friday or Saturday night, many students seem to look for Mr. or Mrs. Right Now, rather than Mr. or Mrs. Right.
  • 与男生/女生碰面的最好的地方
For freshmen, the bus is a great place to meet people on weekends. Odds are, most of them are heading in the same general direction to Frat Row or Beaver Avenue. And when 2 a.m. rolls around, those same people are back on the bus heading home to East Halls. It is not tough to strike up a, "Hey, where are you guys going?" conversation. For the 21-and-over crowd, the bars are where the most action takes place. Cellblock and Indigo are clubs where it is easy to find a dance partner for the night. Bars like Café 210 and Pickles have a little more relaxed atmosphere where it is easier to talk.

  • 着装礼仪
Individuality is encouraged but rarely put into practice. Unfortunately, trends and fads usually take control of the scene. North Face jackets, Uggs, and leggings dominate campus. The most important thing to keep in mind is dress warm! You will not get laughed at for wearing funny pants or a purple shirt. You will get laughed at for wearing shorts in 20 degree weather. Do not be that guy (or girl).

There is no question that the football team holds reign over the campus. Men's basketball is gaining in popularity thanks to the Nittany Nation, Penn State's student section. Women's volleyball also has a very nice following on campus and regularly fills Rec Hall.
  • Most Overlooked Teams
It is easy to say that almost every team gets overlooked because of the football program, namely the women's soccer and the men's and women's fencing teams.
  • 学校精神
Penn State spirit has skyrocketed in recent years thanks to the football team's resurgence to a national contender. Tickets are very tough to acquire, and tent cities are constructed days before home games. That enthusiasm has transferred not only to other sports, but to the entire campus as a whole. The Nittany Lion symbol and the words, "We are Penn State" hold a lot of meaning to students and alumni.
  • 获得门票
Tickets are free to Penn State sporting events except football, baseball, basketball, wrestling, gymnastics and women's volleyball. Ticket information for these sports can be found at the Penn State Athletic Ticket Office in the Bryce Jordan Center. Phone: 1-800-NITTANY or at www.gopsusports.com

  • 散步的最好地点
The trail that runs through the Penn State golf courses is a popular spot for students and locals. On a warm spring day, joggers and walkers are all over State College.

  • 传统
    • : The Mifflin Streak-every year, the students of Mifflin Hall streak across campus. No one quite knows why, but it is a long-standing tradition.
    • : Every year, PSU's Interfraternity Council sponsors THON, a 48-hour dance marathon that raises money benefiting the Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Children's Hospital.THON is the largest student-run philanthropy in the world.
    • Guarding the Lion Shrine : During homecoming of 1966, Syracuse fans doused the Nittany Lion statue with orange paint. Every year since then, The Lion Ambassadors have been responsible for an overnight security session around the statue leading up to the game.
    • : Not knowing the words to the Alma Mater is probably the greatest Penn State tradition. Students typically know the general tune, but sing "I don't know the words to this song" instead of any actual lyrics.
  • 校园传说
    • "Nittany" is named for Native American Princess Nita-nee, a former inhabitant of the region. Historically, Princess Nita-nee never existed; however, the name is derived from a Native American term meaning "single mountain."
    • If you get hit by a CATA bus, you have earned free tuition. No one really knows how this one started, but please do not throw yourself in front of a Blue Loop.
    • Mrs. Atherton, the wife of former PSU President Atherton (1882-1906), haunts Old Botany, so she can watch over her husband's grave. (Ghost hunting, anyone?)
    • Sororities aren't allowed houses because, under State College law, a house with 16 or more women living together is considered a brothel. This is also false: sorority houses did exist on campus until the 1950s, when sororities relocated to newly-available residence hall housing. State College zoning law makes no distinction between fraternity and sorority houses.
    • The ghost of an actress who died in Schwab Auditorium still haunts it. Whether this is true or not, some backstage areas of Schwab are definitely creepy!
    • The sun-dial on the Old Main Lawn marks the geographic center of Pennsylvania. (False-and who comes up with this stuff, anyway?) The sun dial was a gift from the class of 1915, and holds no more significance than historic value.
  • 最喜欢做的事情
Grab a cone of Peachy Paterno at the Creamery, shoot pool at Corner Pocket in the HUB, watch a free movie at LateNight-PennState, visit the Palmer Art Museum, check out a performance at the Eisenhower Auditorium, or support a Penn State sports team. Join a basketball/tennis/volleyball/Frisbee/wiffle ball game in East Halls, lay out in the sun on spring afternoons, anything and everything Penn State football, lunch with friends at the HUB, and watch a big game at the Big Onion.

  • Lulu's

Lulu's is the premier hip-hop club in State College. It features many live bands during the week, but on Friday and Saturday nights the DJs take over for one big dance party.

    131 S. Pugh St.

    (814) 867-5683

  • Cellblock

Wednesdays are actually Cellblock's most popular night because it is the only place in town which promotes an under-21 night. Dollar shots and 25 cent drafts attract a nice crowd to Cellblock.

    420 E. College Ave.

    (814) 272-5000

    www.statecollegemusic.com

  • Club Indigo

Indigo is the most popular dance club in State College. The line regularly stretches a full block down College Avenue. The drinks are cheap, and the girls look good.

    112 W. College Ave.

    (814) 234-1031

  • Shandygaff

The `Gaff is a long-standing PSU tradition. On football weekends, the Shandygaff is filled with a mix of young and old. The wooden floors and benches show the bar's age.

    212 E. College Ave.

    (814) 237-9632

  • The Phyrst

The Phyrst is State College's second-oldest bar, with 15 beers on tap and live entertainment nearly every night. Conveniently located on Beaver Avenue, it's only a few blocks from campus and centrally located in downtown State College. Phyrst's unique, Irish themed atmosphere has given it a strong following throughout the region.

    111 E. Beaver Ave.

    (814) 238-1406

  • The Saloon

The Saloon has more of a "party" atmosphere than many of the area bars; it plays host to live music, karaoke, and DJs during the week, and offers a variety of special mixed drinks. These drinks, including "Monkey Boys," are big sellers and a great way to start the night. Monkey Boys are available in many flavors and served in pitchers topped with a handful of alcohol-soaked cherries.

    101 Heister St.

    (814) 234-0845

  • Zeno's

Zeno's carries what is probably the largest selection of beer in the entire region. This bar is known for its friendly atmosphere, and it offers live music most weekends; these make for an interesting contrast with the dark, smoky basement atmosphere. Zeno's is located right across from campus, and the food comes straight from the Corner Room!

    100 W. College Ave.

    (814) 237-2857

  • The Brewery

Overall, it's a very small joint, and it doesn't have the best ventilation-definitely a place to avoid if you don't like smoke-filled rooms. Home to frequent live performances and open-mic nights, you can also find frequent drink specials throughout the week. The fair variety of on-tap beer is served in mason jars, and there are also bottles available for take-out.

    233 E. Beaver Ave.

    (814) 237-2892

  • The All-American Rathskeller

The Rathskeller is located in a dark basement and known for cheap drinks and an electric atmosphere. Thanks to Spats Café upstairs, the Skeller is also home to some great food.

    208 S. Pugh St.

    (814) 237-3858

    www.theskeller.com

  • Darkhorse Tavern

Located across from campus, the Darkhorse has a low-key atmosphere similar to the Brewery and the Phyrst. The Darkhorse has a reasonably large menu and hosts live music from local bands throughout the week.

    128 E. College Ave.

    (814) 237-0490

    www.darkhorsetavern.com

  • Café 210 West

For many Penn State students, the Café is a frat away from frat. Known as "the place to be" on Friday nights in many circles, the Café is also known for less-than-wonderful service and large waiting lines during peak hours. Nevertheless, the outdoor patio seating (except for the worst winter months, of course) is a great draw, and many feel comfortable within the packed atmosphere and large student population. The Café also offers an extensive food menu for late night munchies or midday meals.

    210 W. College Ave.

    (814) 237-3449

  • Campus Events

Not being 21 is usually not a deterrent for drinking at Penn State. But for those that want to obey the law and stay sober on the weekends, there are many alternatives. Movie theaters and bowling alleys are spread through the area. LateNight-PennState organizes sports and gaming tournaments in the HUB and White Building. Cellblock offers an under-21 night on Wednesdays, which is very popular. For a list of upcoming events, check out www.latenight.psu.edu.
