Tolerance is high on campus. The Gay Lesbian Bi Transgender Assembly is highly influential to school administration. Although most fraternities and sororities are opposed to initiating openly gay students, certain houses say they have gay members and are fully supportive of them, which would never have happened 10 years ago. Gay students who are harassed by roommates and neighbors have a strong support system at the GLBTA.
There is a mix between traditional SoCal conservatives and a growing breed of young liberals.
Coined by timeless rival UCLA as the "University of Spoiled Children," the student body at USC comes across as affluent to outsiders. This is not entirely true. Although a huge number of students are wealthy, there is an even greater number of students on financial aid. It is a credit to the University that students are willing to do whatever it takes to study at USC and get involved on campus.
Christianity and Judaism are the most common religions at USC, but the presence of other religions is definitely felt. There are student organizations for all kinds of religions, as well as Alpha Gamma Omega, the Christian fraternity.
There are more than 300 student organizations on campus, many of which are in the interest of minorities. There is also a Jewish fraternity, Asian fraternity, and an African American fraternity.

USC is filled with social niches. The Greek system is the most outspoken and seemingly predominant social scene. Initially, most freshmen socialize with classmates and people in their housing complex. After the first few weeks of school, people tend to meet at parties on 28th Street (the Row) and other more relaxed settings. Greek students tend to stick together, mostly with the people in their own houses, but any outgoing, confident student will get along just fine with everyone.
It is hard to maintain a stable relationship at USC. This seems to be a combined issue of vanity and bad timing. Many students have accepted the fact that people come to California in search of beautiful weather and beautiful people. There are exceptions to this, of course, but true love may be a little harder to find at USC than other colleges. Like a microcosm of greater Los Angeles, USC singles have a hard time finding lasting relationships due to the plasticity of the region.
If you're looking for something temporary, go to the 9-0 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, the Row on Thursdays, and house parties and residence halls on weekends. If you are looking for commitment, sobriety is necessary.
The dress code on campus is casual. Rainbow sandals, cargo and board shorts, T-shirts, and sunglasses are the fraternity standard when the sun is shining. Sorority girls tend to go to class in velour and terrycloth outfits. Non-Greek students dress in any number of styles to complement the warm weather. Everyone looks the part when it's time to go out.

The most popular sport at USC is football. On game days, campus is packed with fans of either team tailgating and getting ready to enjoy a good game at the Coliseum. A line of students with season tickets often forms hours before the Coliseum even opens so everyone can get a good seat in the student section. School pride is definitely high at every game, and you cannot help but get swept up in it.
  • Most Overlooked Teams
Women's golf and women's track and field
USC's transition from just a party school with amazing sports teams to a school with excellent academics, amazing sports teams, a more controlled drug scene, and a diverse student body has given students a new sort of Trojan pride. Trojans will always be loyal sports fans, but the school spirit has officially extended into the realm of academics, as well. You know that people love their school when most students walking around on campus are wearing some form of USC apparel.
You can buy tickets at the USC Ticket Office in the Student Union, though football games sell out very quickly and very far in advance. It is recommended you buy a student football season ticket, which costs less than $150 and guarantees you a seat at every home football game.

    • The 2-9: The 29th Street Café is a nice place to meet people for drinks. The steak sandwiches are good, along with the Buffalo wings. The outdoor patio is always packed at night.
    • The 9-0: This is one of the more decent names that students have given the 901 Club. Weeknights are crazy. It usually gets too crowded for dancing, but after a few $1 shots and a Long Island Iced Tea, everything seems to be okay. Despite popular belief, whatever happens at the 9-0 does not remain at the 9-0. It has been rated one of America's best college bars by Playboy magazine.
    • Irish Car Bomb: A shot of Bailey's dropped into a half-pint of Guinness. This is one of the most dangerous drinks out there. They taste like chocolate milk shakes, and they go down easily, but when the effects kick in, they are generally stronger than anyone would like them to be. Take it nice and easy.
    • The Lot: Houses several fast food restaurants and Traditions, the campus bar. There is also a small convenience store that many students use to buy snack foods or a quick bite to eat. There is indoor and outdoor seating.
    • OASIS: This is the Web site where you can check academic progress, get grade reports, and check financial information
    • The Parking Structure (a.k.a The Vault): Where students park their cars when they can't get an on-campus parking pass. It is across the 110 Freeway two blocks east of campus.
    • The Row: Extending the entire three blocks that make up 28th Street, this is where most of the fraternity and sorority houses are. You can make it to class in 10 minutes on foot, in five on a bike or skateboard. You can rest assured that there is always mild drinking and marijuana smoking going on at certain houses on the Row, and Thursday nights are wild, when there are typically three or four parties going on at any given time. Girls can get in to any of the fraternity parties. Guys usually need to be on a guest list to get in, but the rules are easily bent if you know the right people.
    • Sake Bomb: A beloved college drinking ritual. Propping a shot of hot Sake atop two chopsticks resting on a half-filled glass of beer, you slam your fists on the table, knocking the shot into the glass, creating a warm and easily chuggable dose of alcohol. They go down easily, so beware.
    • Thematic Option (TO): Also known as "Traumatic Option," TO is a two-year undergraduate honors program that satisfies all general education requirements. It is offered to all incoming freshmen with a Verbal SAT I score of 650 or higher. Students picks from the best teachers at USC with early registration priority.
    • Trojan: A 1912 newspaper article likened the fans at a USC football game to the Trojan army. The name has stuck and so has the spirit of the student body.
    • The U.V.: The outdoor shopping center across Jefferson Boulevard. Here you will find a supermarket, hair salons, a movie and video game store, a music store, Footlocker, Starbucks, Radio Shack, and a small post office, among other things.
Marching Band: The USC marching band is the only college marching band to be featured on a platinum-selling album and be nominated for a Grammy award.
Favorite activities range from movie screenings to Trojan football games at the Coliseum. It's more like, what is there not to do on campus? You will constantly find people working on projects together in classrooms across campus, practicing a music or theater piece, or meeting with one of hundreds of student groups. There are a lot of places to study or work on homework including the many benches and quiet, secluded spots all over campus. There are always a slew of sunbathers out working on their tans, and the Lyon Center is a great place to work out. Sporting events are very big at USC, with some sort of game taking place at least every weekend.

At night, there is always something going on somewhere on campus. McCarthy Quad is a constant site of concerts and other activities organized by the student government. The Cinema School has frequent activities and film festivals, along with several one-time screenings of big movies at the Norris Theater. The School of Theater puts on more than five plays a semester that are performed in theaters scattered around campus. USC is very proud of its Visions & Voices program in which renowned experts in the arts and humanities come to campus to broaden the horizons of students. Whatever you are looking for on campus, USC can accommodate.

Cars are necessary for getting around LA. If you have access to a car, your own or a friend's, the city is yours for the taking. If not, the public buses are accessible, as is the Metro (Subway). Public transportation is cheap, but due to the fact that LA is so spread out, you won't get anywhere as quickly as you want to.

  • The 901 Club

The 9-0 is smaller and dingier than most LA nightclubs, but it seems to do the trick for USC students because there is always a line to get in. It is situated at one end of the Row, which gives it a prime location. The music is always good, but there is minimal room for dancing at peak hours. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the best nights to go. There is no cover charge, and drinks are very inexpensive. Just remember to drink responsibly and don't wander home by yourself if you need to pass out-make sure you go with some friends.

  • 29th St. Café (The 2-9)

The 2-9 is located on the opposite side of the Row from its evil twin, the 9-0. This venue is both a café and a bar with a mellow atmosphere. The inside is a bit crowded, but the porch area provides a nice, open place to relax and drink with friends. The food is good and the beer is always on tap-it's a good place to unwind after a long week.
