    • Be realistic about your schedule. If you party until 4 a.m., don't register for an 8:30 a.m. class.
    • Become self-motivated. Don't wait for something to happen-make it happen yourself.
    • Do the homework.
    • Do the reading.
    • Enjoy your stay here because it goes really fast, and having a real job isn't half as nice as life in college.
    • Get involved: Find a club, a student organization, or an intramural sports team. There's too much going on on campus to miss out.
    • Go to class (it gets harder in college).
    • Go to professors' office hours. Nobody else does.
    • If you want to live in the dorms (especially freshman year), return your housing assignment as soon as possible. Competition for housing at UW is fierce, and it's better to be timely.
    • Registration is at 6 a.m., which is painful, but it's worse to sleep in and not get the classes that you need. Wake up, get your classes, and go back to sleep.
    • Use your freshman year (and sophomore, too) to shop around for classes you like. Don't be afraid to take a class that doesn't coincide with your major. It might turn into your minor, or it may allow you to realize what you definitely don't like, which can be very helpful.

    • Be ready for huge classes.
    • Campus is hard to navigate at first--it's good to have a map with you at all times.
    • Career Discovery Week is really helpful no matter how old you are. The information is just as relevant for freshman as it is for seniors.
    • Don't take any huge classes too early in the morning--nobody's keeping track of you, and you'll skip out a lot.
    • Dorm food is ultra-expensive. The Ave is way cheaper.
    • Dorm rooms are absolutely miniscule. Expect the worst.
    • Just because you haven't done homework on it doesn't mean they can't test you on it--do the reading.
    • Know your options: Check out Early Fall Start and Outdoor Orientation.
    • Meet as many people as possible at the beginning of freshman year--everyone is friendliest at this time.
    • Rush isn't binding. You can go for a day, then drop out.
    • They've got bowling!
    • Thursday is party night in the Greek system and on the Ave.
The Office of Admissions hosts one-hour information sessions at 2:30 p.m. on most Mondays and Fridays (except state holidays). An optional one-hour walking tour immediately follows each session. Registration is recommended: admit.washington.edu/Visit/FreshmanSessions

Prospective students are also welcome to attend a class in their academic area of interest. Choose from among more than 50 classes. Drop-in course schedule: admit.washington.edu/Visit/SampleUWClass
Tours are offered Monday-Friday at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. (except state holidays).

Tours leave from Schmitz Hall's third floor lobby and last about 90 minutes. Bring comfortable walking shoes. Umbrellas are also advised November through April.

Self-tours also available -- just pick up a Campus Walk brochure at the Office of Admissions, 320 Schmitz Hall (Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-5 p.m.), or at the Odegaard Undergraduate Library (OUGL) front desk.

Get in contact with the Center for Career Services. Make friends with a counselor there so that you can have someone to go to when you have questions or concerns. If you want to really go the distance, attend workshops at the Undergraduate Workshops Center, take the interest tests offered at the Student Counseling Center, and learn outside the classroom. Both the Gateway Center and the Center for Career Services have information about student internships and volunteer possibilities to ease you into the real world. When you declare a major, your UW e-mail will be added to the list-serve for your major, and you'll get lots of e-mails about internship or student-employment opportunities. The Daily is also a great place to check out the internship and job opportunities on and around campus.

Seattle is a socially-liberal area with a relatively large gay scene concentrated in the area around Broadway. The UW has a high gay tolerance and a significant LGBT population.
The UW is a relatively politically outgoing campus with a wide range of ideologies. On a typical school day, at least a couple booths on the campus lawn advocate some political or social group or event, and rallies, protests, and marches are not uncommon. The majority of students are politically and socially liberal.
It is extremely varied. Since it is a state school, there are some in-state low- and middle-income students who are attracted to UW for its in-state tuition rates, and there are also students from high-income families.
Because UW is so big, there is a fairly wide range of religions represented. Christianity is one popular religion, and there are a fair amount of Christian organizations.
Clubs include African Student Association, Arab Student Union, B.Crew: An Asian American Student Association, Bangladesh Student Association at the UW, Black Student Union at the UW, Chinese Student Association, Le Groupe Français, Libyan Students Association, Malaysian Students Association, Micronesian Islands Club, Mixed, Multicultural Organization of Students Involved in Change, Omega Delta Phi Fraternity (a brotherhood dedicated to the needs and concerns of the Hispanic community), Pakistani Student Association, Thai Student Association at the UW, Turkish American Student Association, UWdesi (a resource for the UW Indian Community), Vietnamese Student Association, World Peace Buddhists, and the Yan Xin Gigong Club.
  • Did You Know?
In 1968, UW's Black Student Union staged a sit-in at the President's office, demanding a minority education program. After plenty of discussions, the Office of Minority Affairs and the Ethnic Cultural Center/Theater were created to recruit, educate, and help minority students graduate.

The social scene is really active at UW. Depending on what you like to do, there are ample opportunities to go out and drink or stay in and invite people over. Get a group of friends and start a Grey's Anatomy party every week, or find a frat party you've never been to. Because the campus is so big and there are so many students who live in the area, it's not hard to find something to do--at least on Thursday, Friday or Saturday nights!
There's a good mixture of relationship statuses at UW. Lots of students are in long-term relationships, and you'll frequently see couples walking around campus holding hands or lounging together in the Quad. At the same time, there are plenty of single students available for non-committed fun and/or dating.
Going out on the Ave (if you're 21+) is a great way to meet new people. There are a lot of different types of bars so no matter what you're into (dancing, pool, trivia competitions), and there are plenty of opportunities to talk to people. For underage students, house/frat parties are a good bet since lots of people pass through. Although the campus is big, sometimes you can be surprised how many people are connected and have friends in common. Strike up a conversation with someone at a party--oftentimes you both know the host, or you have the same major or residence hall.
For the most part, UW students dress very casually on campus. To stay warm and comfortable, guys and girls sport Northface jackets and jeans for the majority of the year. Only some brave souls wear heels to class, but most girls choose sneakers or UGGs. Most students carry an umbrella in their backpacks at all times because no one ever knows when the rain will start flowing. At night, girls will dress up a bit more, but in general, the guys look the same.

UW is a full-blooded football school. The student section of Husky stadium is packed for big games, and alumni return to the stadium year after year to root for their alma mater. Basketball is popular and gaining in popularity each year. This year, the Husky men's basketball team had a lot of success and students even camped outside of Hec Edmunson Pavilion the night before a couple of big games. On the intramural front, the basketball and softball leagues attract a lot of players.
  • Most Overlooked Teams
Because UW tends to be focused on football and basketball, other sports do tend to get overlooked. Games for other sports (like baseball or soccer) can be really great options, and they often offer free admission in addition to free pizza and chances to win prizes. Because UW tends to be focused on football and basketball, other sports do tend to get overlooked. Games for other sports (like baseball or soccer) can be really great options, and they often offer free admission in addition to free pizza and chances to win prizes.
School spirit rallies mainly around sports games. Huskies get completely decked out in purple and gold clothing, jewelry, makeup, and body paint to show their spirit. When UW kids get to the game, they find themselves not only cheering for a common favorite but also fostering a shared hatred for the opposing team. There is definitely no shortage of school pride at UW, but there is also a fair amount of resentment toward the UW, for whatever reasons. As with everything, there's a large range in the student body. By looking at the population in the student section of a football game, the intensity of Huskies becomes clear. There's a fairly large group of people who have closets stuffed full of Husky gear and devote themselves to being the first ones in line for any sporting event.
You can buy tickets before individual games, but for the big sports (football and basketball) fans usually buy season tickets for the student section well before the season starts. The most popular football package is $112 and includes all home games. You can also opt for the School Pack (four games) for $64. For basketball games, $105 will get you all nineteen regular season home games plus one exhibition game. You can also buy single game tickets for $10 in person at the Husky Ticket Office or buy tickets online at www.gohuskies.com/tickets.
Since the campus is so big, there's a lot of space to roam around. Steven's Way is the main road that runs through campus and makes a giant loop. Some students who jog through campus use this option. The Burke-Gilman Trail is a popular recreational trail that is easily accessible from campus.
  • Did You Know?
    • In 1919, UW athletic teams were called the Sun Dodgers. The mascot changed to Vikings in 1921, and then finally in 1922, UW became the home of the Huskies.
    • The Husky Fever Hall of Fame is a 5,000-square-foot display case located in the Bank of America Arena that honors UW's athletic traditions and accomplishments.

Earl's on the Ave is probably the best bet because they're known for very stiff drinks at reasonable prices. However, every bar has daily specials so make sure to look at those before ordering.
House parties are always rockin the U-District. If you’re a fairly social person and get to know people, it’s easy to get word of mouth about parties. Often, a sports team will host a party, and they can get pretty wild—the crew team is infamous for their rowdy parties. Baseball, rugby, and swim teams also often have parties at a team member’s house. Freshman year, it’s really helpful to make friends with sophomores and upperclassmen who live in houses or know more people who live in houses. Also, as cramped as the dorms are, some people pull off some pretty sweet dorm parties. Get to know the RA (Resident Advisor) on your floor, so that if things get rowdy, you can talk to them and reason with them.
  • Did You Know?
There's a great website that allows you to search for bars, nightclubs, or restaurants in Seattle by neighborhood, cuisine, and hours. It'll also tell you exactly how many venues are having happy hours at the time you're logged on. Check out www.gotime.com for more information.
Club Listings
  • Belltown Billiards

Belltown Billiards is an upscale pool hall in the heart of Belltown. They serve Italian cuisine and have live music Sunday and Thursday nights. The real nights to be there, however, are Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday nights, when they bring in a DJ, make room for a dance floor, and attract a huge young and single crowd. It's particularly fun on Wednesday nights, because there's less going on at other clubs and bars, and so people crowd in at Belltown Billiards. It's also good for private parties and hosts groups from 20 to 400.

  • All American Sports Bar & Grill

This sports bar attracts flocks of students and sports fans. During big televised Husky football and basketball games, it gets pretty crowded, and it's usually significantly male-dominated. Right off the Ave., the space is bright and open and the walls are scattered with TVs tuned to ESPN. On Friday and Saturday nights, the place looks quite a bit different-more like a night club. Middle-aged guys are just as likely as college kids to frequent this spot. Beer is the typical drink of choice, and a menu of standard bar food and appetizers keeps customers coming back.

If you're looking for a fun place to drink and dance, try The Baltic Room in Capitol Hill. Every night has a different theme and music genre, so check the website before you go. There's some seating available but this is generally a place you go to drink heavily and show off your dance moves. It's also available to rent for private parties.

  • College Inn Pub

UW students have come here for years. It's surprisingly big, and it breaks down into three rooms. The main room has pool tables and darts, the back room has tables with chessboards, and a smaller back room is opened up for overflow. That room is open more often than not. The entire pub is below ground. Stick with brew here-the mixed drinks are drinkable, but you can't go wrong with a beer.

  • Dante's Steak & Grog

This sports bar is largely game-oriented. It offers games from shuffleboard to pool to video games and darts, and even hosts some trivia games for groups of friends. It's got big tables, tons of space, and just enough personality to make things interesting. Dante's definitely makes a good hang out spot for a group of tight-knit friends. • Earl's on the Ave

This place is a dive, but there are advantages. They make the drinks so strong that there's a sign at the bar telling you to order them weak if that's how you want them. For many college students with the one goal of getting wasted for cheap, there's no better place to be. It's a good place to meet people and a great place to unwind.

  • Flowers Bar and Restaurant

Flowers has kind of an artsy, meditative feel to it, like a lot of kids from the drama department might hang out there. It's a good place to chill, and the atmosphere is definitely more low-key-it's not the rowdy drunkenness that is Earl's. There's good food, and it's definitely more of a sit-down place, with comfy seats very conducive to intimate conversations. A nice place to bring a date or a small group of friends.

The city's best comedy club. It's got a great atmosphere, and it's hard to find an act that falls flat. They bring in seasoned veterans, as well as local amateur nights, but it's always funny. It's a great place to go when you feel like something a little different. Drinks are pricey, but strong. All ages for the early show (8 p.m.), 21-and-over for the late show (10 p.m.)

  • Irish Emigrant

A huge favorite with UW kids. It's a casual atmosphere that gets fairly loud and rowdy if you go on the right night. There are a nice set of pool tables upstairs, and after all's said and done, it's Seattle's most authentic Irish pub. You get the real deal with song, food, dance, and drink. (It's 21-and-over after 10 p.m.)

  • The Ram Restaurant & Big Horn Brewery

Probably the closest thing to an official Husky sports bar, UW fans definitely frequent this joint. It's a nice bar with comfy seats and plenty of big screens for the viewing. At game time, the place gets as packed as the stadium-and often, just as rowdy. They serve microbrews and a wide variety of American brew. This place has a lot of energy, and it's no coincidence they call it Seattle's best damn sports bar.

  • Red Door

A great place for large groups, Red Door has a lot of tables and is a great place to relax with friends. In the summer time, the outdoor patio/bar is open and there's lots of drink and food choices. They offer daily food specials in addition to a Happy Hour on weekdays.

  • Twist at the Pomeroy

Known as Belltown's Best Happy Hour, Twist offers food and drink specials from 4-11p.m. Sunday to Thursday and Friday and Saturday from 4-7p.m. A little bit classier than the bars in Fremont or the Ave, Twist is a small lounge with great views and a sophisticated style.

  • DV8

An 18-and-over club where local DJs spin for a well-dressed (dress code enforced at the door) crowd of high-school students and young adults. The club serves no alcohol, but they do sell expensive non-alcoholic drinks. The dance floor fits about 200 people, you can play pool alternately, and every now and then, DV8 hosts local bands. It's not always a solely young crowd, but it may seem a little tiresome for college kids. It's worth a try, though, and if you bring enough friends, you can make your own fun on the dance floor. Open Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday nights.

  • House parties

If you aren't 21, you're limited to house/frat parties but these can be fun especially if they have themes. Can't find a good party? Have your own! Do not try your luck at bars if you're not 21. Fake IDs are frequently confiscated and never returned.
