The office also organizes support groups and social groups in which anyone can participate. Its annual dance is very popular on campus.
  • 政治活动
UCSD students are generally liberal, and in the last couple of years, more students have become politically aware and more active in political issues. In the past, UCSD has had an active political life, especially during the Vietnam War. Some of this political activity is being recharged through organizations, clubs, and social groups based around political parties and ideas.
  • 经济地位
Financial aid through the form of grants and loans make attending UCSD open to everyone regardless of economic status, although the majority of UCSD students are middle class.
  • 最寻常的地区
UCSD is a public institution—therefore, it has no religious affiliation. Christian groups, both Protestant and Catholic, are visible on campus. Many people attend bible studies and group meetings. Also the Jewish Student Association and the Muslim Student Association are very active on campus.
  • 校园内的少数俱乐部
Minority clubs are very popular on campus and are available for various different ethnicities and religious and social groups. If there isn’t a minority club that fits your interest, you can also start a new one. For a list of clubs, look at http://asucsd.ucsd.edu. There is also a Cross-Cultural Center, which has programs open to all students (ccc.ucsd.edu).

Students do most of their partying off campus, especially after their freshman year. The social scene is very laid-back, and people usually stick with their friends. Once students turn 21, the social scene moves from house parties to the bars in Pacific Beach. The bars are very popular, especially on the weekends, and many students go out with big groups of friends to have a fun night.
  • 同盟或者恋爱关系
The question of hookups or relationships depends entirely on the individual. While there are a large number of students in relationships, many find themselves too busy with studying, going to class, and working to have a relationship. For them, a hookup at a bar or party one night is all they're looking for. Others want a stable relationship; it all depends on the person.
  • 与男生/女生碰面的最好的地方
If you are looking to meet lots of people, Tijuana is your best bet. As soon as UCSD students cross the border and find themselves in Mexico, they seem to lose all of their inhibitions. Everyone goes to Mexico on the pretense of getting drunk, dancing, meeting new people, and having a fun night.
  • 着装礼仪
UCSD is very casual. Students live in sweatshirts, jeans, and flip-flops.

  • 学校精神
Normally, UCSD is not very spirited. However, at certain events throughout the year school spirit becomes more prevalent. Freshmen or other people living on campus have more of a spirited attitude about UCSD, which usually begins to wane after they move off campus. The Unolympic games are held during Welcome Week of every year and are dominated by freshmen, but anyone can participate. At the Unolympic games each college competes against the others in games such as tug of war and wrestling. The best college wins the Golden Shoe, an old gym shoe spray painted gold, which they proudly display in their buildings. Occasionally, the Golden Shoe is stolen during the year by a losing college. Every year, there is a Spirit Week on campus. Each college picks a theme and decorates its part of the campus. There are events during the day on Library Walk, and the week concludes with a basketball game. The event with the most school spirit is the Sun God Festival. This is popular for all students, not just those living on campus. Campus is always filled on the Sun God Festival with students having a good time and participating in events all over campus. The day concludes with a concert at RIMAC field.

  • 校园传说
    • There are tunnels under campus that go from one building to another in case of emergencies. When much of UCSD was designed and built in the 1960s, other campuses, such as Berkeley, were experiencing lots of riots and demonstrations. The community of La Jolla is very conservative and did not want to have a bunch of protesting students living close by, so they presumably convinced the designers of UCSD to build tunnels connecting the different parts of the school. The tunnels were to be used by the National Guard; in case any of the students tried to protest they could easily and quickly be subdued. Some of the escaped mental patients supposedly hide in the tunnels to avoid having to go back to the mental institution.
    • There is a Veterans Hospital across the street from campus and the Camp Snoopy dorms. Sometimes the mental institution patients from the VA hospital escape and try to hide in people's dorm rooms. Right next to the dorms is a canyon with lots of trees, thick underbrush, and a little stream. At night, if it gets very quiet, you can hear the escaped patients singing and laughing to themselves.
  • 最喜欢做的事情
Hanging out at Porter’s Pub, listening to poetry at the Grove in the Old Student Center, working out at one of the three gyms on campus, attending free concerts, finding the talking trees in the Eucalyptus forest, listening to the UCSD radio station, and going on an Outback backpacking trip. Students can watch movies in Price Center, listen to music on Library Walk, and go rock climbing at Canyon View Recreation Center.

There is a festival each quarter on campus: Fallfest, Winterfest, and the Sun God Festival. For each, there are booths and events during the day and a concert at night. The Sun God Festival is the most popular. Traditionally during the Sun God Festival, students spend the entire day drinking and having fun. Some say it is the only day that UCSD students don’t act nerdy. UCSD students look forward to the Sun God Festival all year long. The concerts usually combine famous groups along with local San Diego Bands. Groups that have played in the past include Bad Religion, the Long Beach Dub Allstars, Coolio, Ozomatli, Jurassic 5, and Cake.
  • Did You Know?
    • Always have a designated driver (DD). If you don't, you can call a Triton Taxi, which picks you up and takes you back to campus.
    • For those under 21, forget the fake IDs. San Diego is very strict about IDs, and they are always checked. Also, most places will not take paper, expired, out-of-state licenses, or state identification cards. Make sure you bring a valid CA license or a passport!
