    • With friends in your dorm room
    • Always speak up when you feel you have been graded unfairly. All grades are subject to change.
    • Ask your professors for help-they don't bite. Most of them are more than willing to help students outside of class.
    • Come with an open mind, and you'll make some amazing friends from all over the world.
    • Don't be shy. The only way you can make friends is if you go to all the fun events and make yourself known to everyone else.
    • Explore both the city and the campus! There are so many opportunities for free shows, information about various clubs, and food all over campus, but you've got to look for it.
    • Go to class. It really does help even if you aren't paying total attention; it is good to be there and make yourself present.
    • Never willingly sign up for an 8 a.m. class-you'll probably oversleep at least once.
    • See the city, go to class, and don't take too many reading-intensive classes at once. The main reason students don't like NYU or they transfer is because they had unrealistic expectations that were not met. Experience NYU for what it is and not what you expect it to be.
    • The Gallatin School of Individualized Study, a small innovative college within New York University, gives students the chance to create their own program of study by allowing them to take a multitude of courses within the different schools of NYU. In this way, students may focus on their unique interests. For more information on the Gallatin School of Individualized Study, go to www.nyu.edu/gallatin.
    • Each year, thousands of people from more than 80 countries worldwide apply for admission to NYU Stern School of Business, due to its prestige and notoriety.
    • The graduate schools most often attended by recent NYU graduates are pretty impressive: Columbia University, Harvard University, New York University, University of Pennsylvania, and Yale University.

  • Tips for Getting In
    • Be creative in your essay.
    • Be passionate and feel free to express your beliefs; NYU is open to progressive thinking.
    • Besides having good grades, the school values a sense of individuality and creativity.
    • Become really good friends with your adviser-they can make or break your schedule.
    • Bring comfortable, fashionable shoes. Walking a mile to class in an uncomfortable pair of heels is tough to do.
    • Don't just hang out with people you already knew from high school. Branch out.
    • Every student at NYU was "that kid" in high school with the incredible talent. Well, guess what? That's every other kid's story, too. It's taking your talents to a new level.
    • Get a meal plan with the biggest amount of Declining Dollars.
    • Join clubs and activities in order to meet people.
    • Know the weather before you leave your dorm.
    • Learn how to navigate the subway.
    • Leave your door open when you're home, to meet people on your floor.
    • Plan your study abroad early, and get your Visa application in even earlier.
    • Research professors before selecting a class.
    • Take advantage of the free events NYU offers.
    • There's a ton of free printing on campus, so you don't need your own printer, but plan to print early-lines can be long!
Information sessions are a great way to learn about NYU. The information session is an hour-long group meeting designed to answer your questions about admission requirements, research opportunities, internships, double majors, on-campus housing, application deadlines-anything you want to know about NYU. Group information sessions are typically available Monday through Friday. During the fall, NYU holds information sessions and tours on select weekends.
Informative campus tours are held year-round, and visitors are most often taken to each of the various schools at the University and to other important locations such as the Elmer Bobst Library and the Helen and Martin Kimmel Center for University Life.
NYU does not organize overnight visits, due to the large volume of campus visitors each year (roughly 60,000 students), but if you have a friend or family member that attends the school, it is possible to stay overnight with them in their dorm.

NYU is full of LGBT and ally students. The University supports them well with an active LGBT center that works with other campus organizations to facilitate programs like Safe Zone training. LGBT students are involved in all aspects of NYU, from politics and business to theatre and sports, and the majority of the student body is open and accepting.
NYU students love to protest. Whether it's over war, hunger in a foreign country, or the University president's policies, NYU students will be there in Washington Square Park or in front of a campus building with signs and megaphones.
With tuition as high as NYU's, quite a few students come from wealthy families, and those families support them generously while they study. Alongside a large affluent population, there are first generation college students and people putting themselves through school. NYU represents the whole range of socioeconomic possibilities, but the average student is upper-middle class.
In a city like New York, you can find any religion you can imagine. Most students on campus claim to be Jewish, Christian, Muslim, and Hindu.
The minority clubs at NYU are proud organizations. From Afghan to Vietnamese and everything in between, there is a student group for every culture and country at NYU. Unlike high school, where people joined these clubs just to get in to college, all members genuinely want to be in the clubs.

The NYU Student Health Center offers all forms of birth control, from pills and patches to shots and free condoms. As long as you either have an exam at the health center or send your personal records to them, you can have prescriptions filled at the campus pharmacy. Pretty much every type of personality is represented at NYU, so once you become situated, it shouldn't be hard to find your own group. Once you've bypassed that initial obstacle, there are a lot of fun-loving partiers to be found at NYU. Or if you're more of the study group social butterfly, there are plenty of intellectuals to discuss theories with. In fact, many of the students at NYU love to hear themselves talk, so there is never a shortage of stimulating conversation.
The girls at NYU often find themselves frustrated with the lack of straight guys, and thus, venture into the wilds of NYC or other universities to find a mate. Some are in relationships, but a lot of girls commiserate over the lack of guys and date around. Guys also tend to prefer dating or hookups to long-term relationships, although many girls say it seems that all the decent straight guys at NYU have girlfriends. For whatever reason, you won't find many couples in which both partners attend NYU.

Although sports are not a big school spirit factor, students are definitely proud of the NYU name. This is evident in the multitude of NYU-emblazoned T-shirts, sweatshirts, sweatpants, and hats that they wear to class each day (either that, or they just are constantly out of clean laundry). Students in each school at NYU have their own particular brand of pride, many of them thinking that their school is the best. At the beginning of each school year, Coles Sports Center hosts a competition between all of the NYU schools to see who has the most athletic prowess. Events include volleyball, basketball, pingpong, and foosball.
In the world of NYU sports, they just want you to be there and cheer, so tickets are either free or nonexistent.
New York City's famous Central Park is perfect for walking, running, biking, or rollerblading, especially in the fall and spring months when the foliage is breathtaking (and these are probably some of the only trees you will see in large groups in the city). Van Cortlandt Park is another option, with plenty of wooded trails and hills for running.

    • NYU is going to build dorms on Governors Island and run a tram back and forth to Washington Square.

One of the greatest facilities NYU has to offer is the NYU Ticket Central, which has discounted student tickets to popular Broadway shows and even free movie screening passes. For those on an even tighter budget, there are always shows being put on by the Tisch drama students, with prices ranging anywhere from free to $15. The Violet Café is transformed into a coffeehouse on a regular basis and hosts open mic nights and student poetry readings. For physical fun, Coles and Palladium offer a variety of clubs and classes. The climbing wall at Palladium is a great way to change up your workout. Mostly, though, everyone's favorite thing to do in between classes is grab a cup of coffee and find a bench in the park or a couch in a lounge and take a few minutes to catch up with friends. Being that NYU is centrally located in an urban area rich with culture, students are not limited to University activities.

    1. In the 1920s, a sportswriter for the Morning Telegraph, John Fitzgerald, overheard stablehands in New Orleans refer to NYC's racetracks as "the Big Apple." He then named his column "Around the Big Apple." A decade later, jazz musicians adopted the term to refer to New York City, and especially Harlem, as the jazz capital of the world. They said there are many apples on the trees of success, but when you pick New York City, you pick the big apple.
    2. The Statue of Liberty, also referred to as "the Lady of the Harbor," is 101 feet tall from base to torch, and 305 feet tall from pedestal foundation to torch. She has a 35-foot waist and an 8-foot index finger, and she weighs 450,000 pounds.
