  • Tips for Getting In
    • Admissions officers take a holistic approach. A strong transcript is good but not enough, so make sure you have some good extracurriculars that you can hang your hat on. Demonstrating leadership is also a huge plus.
    • Branch out and take a variety of classes.
    • Getting strong recommendations from teachers will provide a boost to your profile.
    • If you're absolutely sure that Northwestern is the only school for you, apply Early Decision. Admissions officers like the strong interest it shows.
    • Write an essay that will stand out.
    • Bikes, skateboards, and long boards are great methods of transportation, especially if you are traveling from South to North campus, or vice versa.
    • Evanston is a very expensive place to live.
    • Greek life is prominent.
    • The quarter system moves VERY quickly.
    • Your home state is not the center of the universe.
Northwestern information sessions are 45 minutes long, and reservations are not necessary unless a group of 10 or more will be attending. Check out www.ugadm.northwestern.edu/freshman/visiting, and click on "Information Sessions," or call (847) 491-7271 for session times, to set up reservations, or to get the most up-to-date information. Individual schools may also offer information sessions and tours, so check those out, too.
Tours are given daily and last about one and a half hours. Groups of 10 or more need to make a reservation; otherwise, they're not necessary. Tours leave from the Office of Undergraduate Admission at 1801 Hinman Avenue. If you need to make a group reservation, call the Office of Undergraduate Admission at (847) 491-7271.
Individual overnight visits are open to high school seniors from September through March, and depending on availability, Northwestern will provide accommodations with a student host in a residence hall. Reservations are required at least one week in advance. Call the admissions office at (847) 491-7271 or visit ugadm.northwestern.edu/visit/plan-your-visit/index.html.

    • Many of the schools have their own career center offices, and these provide great resources regarding recent job and internship postings. They also help with resumes and cover letters.
    • Networking is important. Get to know people, and they'll help you out in the long run. Professors and advisers are great resources. NU students have high placement rates, so extra effort will get you far in your search. Also, take advantage of programs put on by the Alumni Association. Alumni connections are a great way to get a foothold in whatever field you're interested in-Northwestern alums take care of their own.

The social scene at NU is what you make of it. If you want to spend your time in the library, by all means, do. However, students looking for a crazy party scene will probably end up somewhat disappointed-Northwestern is not your average Big Ten school, after all. But you will find enough frat and off-campus parties to whet your appetite, and the bar scene is all right, definitely enhanced by a good pre-game. While NU students definitely aren't as anti-social as some schools believe, the party scene could afford to be more vibrant.
Northwestern's social scene definitely lends itself more to drunken, random hookups than long-term commitments, but being located in the middle of the "dining capital of the North Shore" does provide for some nice dates. And don't forget that Chicago is just a 45-minute "El" ride away. As far as the dating scene, it's probably geared more toward hookups than relationships, since NU students are overcommitted as is, but there are plenty of relationships that have been going strong for quite some time.
Style at NU varies a great deal across the board. You'll see students in their pajamas and sweats, as well as people in their Sunday best, preps, hipsters, and everything in between. Most dress pretty laid-back, though, with your usual helping of Gap and Urban Outfitters. All style is pointless come winter, though, as everyone opts for their heaviest North Face winter coats.

Students generally get excited for big basketball and football games. It is an unusual mix to have a school like Northwestern, at the top in terms of academics, to be in a conference like the Big 10. It doesn't matter if the teams do well; students will be spirited.
NU students can get in free to all regular season sporting events with their student ID. For Family Weekend, discounted tickets are offered to family members early in the school year. Other than that, tickets are usually pretty accessible to the general public and are relatively cheap.
Paths through the Lakefill. Students also like to run to the Baha'i Temple, just north of the northernmost tip of campus.

Between classes, work, and extracurriculars, there's no shortage of entertainment at NU. Students can enjoy one of the hundreds of student theater productions at Shanley Pavilion (a small shack near Norris), share a cup of joe at Lisa's Café, catch a movie brought by A&O Productions, or create something at ARTica Studios. Students can also play beach volleyball, sail, bike ride, inline skate, or catch a show at the Century Theater. Evanston also has a good variety of shopping, so students hit up Urban Outfitters, American Apparel, Francescas, and Crossroads (a second-hand store) quite often!

It's a simple fact: Students at Northwestern like to be involved. And with more than 200 student groups to join, they don't really run into any problems pursuing their interests. From speech and mock trial to club sports to ethnic and pre-professional clubs, you should be able to find a group that shares what you're passionate about. So the next step is to go ahead and do it. Take advantage of the activities fair, and find the stuff you really like to do-it'll make your time at Northwestern much more rewarding. At the end of the day, college is about a whole lot more than academics.
