  • Tips for Getting In
    • Be genuine in your Duke supplemental essays! Research the school and show them that you really do want to come.
    • Have a serious commitment to community service. In the same vein, show Duke that you really have a passion for one of your extracurriculars.
    • If it's really your top choice, apply Early Decision.
    • The obvious: work hard!
    • Duke is pretty much its own little world; except on weekends, you don't really see the outside on this enclosed campus.
    • Durham is really not a great college town-Chapel Hill, however, passes quite nicely and is a free bus ride away.
    • Just because the Marketplace is all-you-can-eat doesn't mean you should eat all you can.
    • Just how big Greek life is here
    • Parking can be very difficult.
    • Without air conditioning, the first and last few weeks will be a formative experience.
Interviews are conducted by alumni and are not mandatory. Information sessions are held daily, and a schedule can be found on the Duke Undergraduate Admissions Web site or by calling (919) 684-3214.
Throughout the year, student-led walking tours of campus are offered. Tours typically last at least one hour and fifteen minutes, and no more than an hour and a half. All tours originate at the Admissions Office, which is located on West Campus. No appointment is necessary; however, if your group is larger than 20 people, contact Admissions in advance about the possibility of a group tour. Also, call ahead if you require accommodations for a physical disability or will require physical assistance during a tour of campus.
Admissions will arrange overnight hosting for high school seniors visiting Duke in the fall. With appropriate advance notice (two weeks or more), a Duke student will host a perspective high school student overnight. In April, admitted high school seniors, deciding whether or not to matriculate, can stay overnight during Blue Devil Days.

Finding jobs and internships can be a harrowing experience for anyone. For some people, things will just fall into place. But most people have to really work at it, so the best advice is to get in touch with the Career Center early on. They offer résumé help, mailing lists, and job listings. Go to the job fair at the beginning of the school year, and get on some more e-mailing lists-networking is your friend! In this market, you have to use everything you've got. Fortunately, being part of the Duke community offers a ton! Talk with professors and tap into the alumni network. Be proactive and apply for anything that interests you. Eventually, you'll land something great!

The gay scene is not very visible at Duke, but gays are certainly not singled out for persecution. A recent campaign for gay acceptance, involving T-shirts reading "Love is Love," was met with an enthusiastic response, as students across campus lined up to get the shirts; the 2,000 shirts ordered quickly ran out.
Duke, like most universities, has a strong liberal streak, but conservatives have made their voices heard, as well. There are a variety of political organizations on campus that are populated by a significant percentage of the student body. Students advocate for a wide range of political causes, and the University regularly schedules guest political speakers, which are usually very well attended. For example, in 2010, more than 1,000 tickets to see Al Gore lecture sold out in a matter of minutes.
The Duke student body is definitely upper-middle class. Even those who use financial aid usually manage to look well-off. There are, of course, people from a variety of economic backgrounds, but you wouldn't think it in your first glance of campus. Duke is clearly image-conscious.
The spires of Duke University Chapel dominate the West Campus view, and in the basement of the Chapel, Duke's Religious Life Center funds and promotes many of the religions most prominent on campus. The most popular faiths are Protestantism, Catholicism, Judaism, Islam, and Hinduism. The Freeman Center for Jewish Life provides a location for Jewish activities and kosher dining, and Duke University Chapel hosts services for a wide array of denominations every week.
Duke has a number of thriving minority clubs, which put on astounding cultural programs each year. Perhaps one of the most active is SAASA, the South Asian-American Student Association, which involves most of the South Asian students on campus. The ASA (Asian Students Association) is also a vibrant part of the community.

It is rare to find a Duke student who doesn't find the University a bit cliquish. This is not to say that you can't make a lot of friends in a variety of groups, but sometimes, parts of Duke can feel exclusive. Students are fun, bright, and attractive, but tend to stay in small groups of fun, bright, and attractive people. It is easy to carry on a conversation with classmates on the bus, walking to or from a class, or anywhere on campus, but if you're from different groups, it is unlikely you will move to the tier "close personal friend" from that of "casual acquaintance." Once you find your niche, Duke will be a ton of fun. Dorms, clubs, organizations, and projects-anything where you interact with a lot with other people-can be great places to forge strong friendships.
Hookups are definitely the prevailing wind in these parts, but there are some students who manage to maintain healthy, committed relationships on campus.
There is no set dress code, but, overall, students are preppy. The likes of J. Crew, The Gap, and Vineyard Vines reign supreme, with button-down shirts, khakis, and Sperry's being a part of nearly every student's wardrobe. When dressing down, people are likely to sport jeans, a Duke T-shirt or sweatshirt, and flip-flops. Duke students almost always look good, and you will find few who are willing to roll out of bed and go to class in pajamas or sweats. There are certainly exceptions to these rules, with plenty of students refusing to conform to Nantucket-inspired apparel. On the whole, though, campus looks fit for an L.L. Bean catalog.

Men's basketball. Take a "smart-kid" school, add one really exceptional sports team, and it will become the mecca around which we all flock.
  • Most Overlooked Teams
Women's basketball is not necessarily overlooked, but the sport certainly doesn't get the attention it deserves, especially considering that Duke has some of the nation's top players. The lacrosse team is also top-notch, recently garnering a national championship; however, it does not have one iota of the fan frenzy that basketball generates.
Duke spirit invariably centers around the basketball season, and during the spring, it's amazing how avid people are for Duke. While there are still some bitter Harvard and Yale rejects dampening the mood around campus, most students are genuinely thrilled about being at Duke. The Duke paraphernalia is ubiquitous, and students represent the brand regularly. Walk across the quad on a cool day and you're bound to see a handful of people wearing a 100-percent Duke outfit: sweatpants, T-shirt, and sweatshirt.
Students get into Duke games for free, and getting in is usually not a problem. For example, you can walk up to the football stadium during halftime, and you'll be sure to get in for free. The same is certainly not true for men's basketball. The stories you have heard of people camping out for months to get tickets are not in the least exaggerated. Students form groups and plan schedules around being able to sleep in a tent from January to mid-February or early March. You can usually get into basketball games without camping out, but you will still have to get there several hours early to wait in line.
Sarah P. Duke Gardens is astoundingly beautiful. Duke Forest may be tempting, but don't ever try it alone. Of course, everywhere on campus is beautiful, so even the walk from East to West can be enjoyable.

This means pizza, steaks, subs, Chinese, Middle Eastern, Italian, Mexican, and so on, are all delivered to your door without you having to dish up extra dough.

  • "Green" Initiatives
Green initiatives are abundant, as the University aims to be carbon-neutral by 2018. Lights turn on and off via motion sensors, there are water-saving measures implemented in bathrooms, incentives to bring a reusable mug at many eateries on campus, a community vegetable garden-the whole nine yards! Duke engineers and environmental science students even built a "Smart Home" on campus, which won a national design competition sponsored by Home Depot.
    • The `Dillo: Armadillo Grill, a popular place for some good Mexican food
    • The BC: The Bryan Center
    • Blocking: In the housing lottery, it is possible to sign up in a "block." Students who "block" are given consecutive lottery numbers to have a better chance of getting rooms next to or near each other.
    • Cameron Crazies: What Duke students morph into once they enter Cameron Indoor Stadium
    • Grace: When the temperature dips below freezing in K-Ville, campers are granted "grace" and allowed to head back home for the rest of the night.
    • Graffiti Bridge: The bridge between West and East on which students are allowed to plug parties, activities, and theme weeks
    • Gross Chem: The building is the "Paul M. Gross Chemical Laboratory Building," but is referred to as "Gross Chem."
    • K-Ville: Krzyzewskiville, the village of tents created by avid students camping out for Duke basketball tickets
    • Tent Check: There are random tent checks for those who do tent for games, to make sure everyone's there. The killers are the 2 a.m. tent checks when everyone stumbles into the bitter cold in their pajamas.
    • Tunneling: East Campus has a tunnel system under the dorms.
    • Walk-up Line: The line of people who didn't camp out for the basketball games
    • Blue Devil Mascot : The Blue Devil mascot appears to pump people up at all the basketball games. Since he can't talk to mock (and what's a basketball game without jeering?), he wears a headband with some little witticism about the other team. He also runs over to the band and bangs the bass drum during tip-off.
    • Bonfires : After Duke beats UNC in a home basketball game or wins a national championship, the wooden benches which line the West Campus quads burn in a giant celebratory bonfire (monitored by fire marshals, of course).
    • K-Ville : This little tent community has become highly organized in recent years. It requires registration, scheduling, making tent checks, and sitting/sleeping for long hours in the bitter cold. However, there are some perks-free pizzas, meeting the basketball players, and courtside seats for the biggest rivalry in college basketball!
    • Last Day of Classes Concert (LDOC): On the last day of classes, Duke, like some other colleges, has several artists come in to do a concert before the reading period and exams begin. The bands are usually quite good, and it's a great chance to relax with friends before you have to buckle down and study hard for finals.
    • Midnight Breakfast : This is a tradition that is much enjoyed on East Campus. The Sunday night before exams begin, freshmen line up on the quad to get into the Midnight Breakfast. Inside is a mixture of desserts and breakfast food, as well as (usually) some free T-shirts. This is definitely a tradition worth taking part in.
    • All students, before they graduate, must complete five "graduation requirements." These include: tunneling, climbing atop Baldwin Auditorium, driving around the West Campus traffic circle backwards, climbing the Chapel, and hooking up in the library stacks or Duke Gardens.
    • East Campus wall is 10 feet high-three feet above ground and seven beneath.
    • James B. Duke first offered his endowment to Princeton University, but only if its trustees would change the name to "Duke." They refused. James B. Duke approached Trinity College next, and they agreed (other versions of this story substitute Yale or Georgetown for Princeton).
    • The only reason US News doesn't rank Duke ahead of Stanford is because Stanford would refuse to participate in the rankings if it was ranked below Duke.
If you can find a DUI (Duke University Improv) performance, go to it! Duke's a cappella groups are also awesome, and there are some exceptional dance groups, as well. Plays and jazz at the Mary Lou Williams Center are also offered regularly, and the Nasher Museum of Art has some great exhibits throughout the year. Movies in the Griffith Film Theater are either cheap or free, and the theater shows some amazing films from time to time.

  • Student Newspaper

There are literally hundreds of organizations on Duke's campus, meaning that there is definitely something for everyone. You can find any sport under the sun, from football to Frisbee, at any level of competition, from varsity (most intense) to club (moderate commitment) to intramural (very leisurely). The most popular organizations on campus are those associated with political causes (Duke Democrats, College Republicans, Model United Nations) and community service (Habitat for Humanity, Red Cross, and numerous tutoring programs that interact with local Durham schools). The school's religious organizations are also very active (Hillel, Campus Crusade for Christ, Duke Catholic Center, and Muslim Students Association), organizing retreats, scripture studies, and socials throughout the year. There are several publications which students can write for, most notable of which is The Chronicle, Duke's daily newspaper.
The incredibly wide variety of groups across campus virtually ensures that, at Duke, you'll find your passion both in and out of the classroom.
