    • In 1813, James McGill, a Scottish immigrant who prospered in Montréal, bequeathed his 46-acre estate, Burnside Place, and £10,000 to what would become McGill University. James McGill, along with part of his accountant, is buried in front of the steps to the Arts Building.
    • In 1906, the University acquired a second campus when Sir William Macdonald endowed a college in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, 32 kilometres west of Montréal, today the site of McGill's Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.
    • Ernest Rutherford's groundbreaking work on the nature of radioactivity was conducted in what was then the Macdonald Physics Building. He won the Nobel Prize in 1908 for this research. McGill's Rutherford Museum houses much of the apparatus the scientist built to conduct his experiments.
    • In an attempt to appease the French traditionalists of Québec, McGill charges significantly less for its French classes. Students in French classes are charged local Québec tuition fees, about $200 per French course.

    • Administration is covered with red tape.
    • Advising here is terrible.
    • Finding an apartment and finals coincide.
    • Frosh is not a good way to meet people (see Traditions in the Inside Scoop section).
    • High school French is almost useless.
    • It gets ridiculously slushy in the winter.
    • It's hard to find an on-campus job.
    • The French department here is really bad.

  • 找工作或者实习的建议
Check CAPS regularly, but also check local newspapers and Web sites. Craigslist.org has a site for most major cities, and it's free to post, so tons of companies do. If there is a specific field you are interested in, do the research as to what major companies are involved, and look at their Web sites for any postings. McGill itself does not have a counselor who will help you, but CAPS will have lots of Web sites and phone numbers to check out. Also, if you have made any close connections with professors, they are good people to ask for the lowdown on any positions, especially ones they have a personal connection to.

Queer McGill is an organization very active in promoting its hotline and services for the GLBTQ population of McGill. They have posters up all over campus, and they host many different events, activities, and lectures. McGill is a fairly liberal school with liberal administration, and Montréal is a very liberal city. The university population is overall very accepting, and issues of gender and sexuality always seem to find their way into class discussion.
  • 政治活动
In part due to the high number of international students, students at McGill are hyper aware of the world around them. For this reason, there is a great amount of political activity on campus. Though politics are generally left-leaning, there is still a diversity of opinions represented on campus, and controversy occasionally ensues. Lately, extremely controversial issues have flared up on campus, with such questions as whether to condemn Israel or admit a pro-life group official club status. McGill students are always looking to make a point, whether to have their voices heard or simply beef up their résumés.
  • 经济地位
International students tend to be much wealthier than Canadian or Québec students. There is definitely a “rich American” stereotype. The wealthy kids with trendy clothes are the most visible economic class, but this is probably because they are the flashiest. Talking to some of the Québec residents who make up about half of the population, one will find many who pay for school themselves or live with their parents to save money. Québec tuition is very cheap, so not only the elite can afford it. In general, since McGill is a public university, the student body is pretty well-rounded when it comes to economic status.
  • 最寻常的地区
Christianity is the dominant religion at McGill, but the most visible religious groups are probably Islamic and Jewish. There is an interfaith publication called Radix, and many clubs for various faiths. These clubs host holiday parties and help students find places of worship. They occasionally hold lectures or discussions on campus, but most religious practice is private.
  • 校园内的少数俱乐部
McGill's clubs read like a U.N. attendance record, with a club for practically every country. Since the international population is high, minority status is not lumped into “Middle Eastern” or “Asian,” but often in terms of specific nations.
  • Did You Know?
    • Only about 50 percent of students identify English as their mother tongue, and nearly 30 percent report that their first language is neither French nor English.
    • American students make up only about 7 percent of the total student population.

  • 社会科学
People at McGill are very friendly when approached, but most tend to stick to a close-friend group when it comes to parties and going out. Breaking out of the clique is a big challenge despite the fact the McGill is huge. It goes along with the paradox that in a big city, one can be all alone. Still, most people do find that social group, and through clubs and class manage to meet plenty of people.
  • 同盟或者恋爱关系
First-year residence relationships seem to be pretty popular, but that's after Frosh week, when basically everyone hooks up with everyone else. Some of these relationships last after moving out of residence, but some of them don't. Random hookups are pretty easy, considering the meat-market aspect of most bars and clubs.
  • 与男生/女生碰面的最好的地方
A lot of people meet in residence, or later through a friend who they used to know from residence. Also clubs, or classes in your major, are a pretty common way of spending lots of time next to someone interesting and cute. You can occasionally meet someone cool at a bar or club, but you can also meet an ugly and sleazy 30-year-old man, or a girl who just wants to dance with her friends.
  • 着装礼仪
The campus at a glance looks pretty fashionable. Students make an effort with their appearance, and it shows. Many girls get dressed for class with outfits, hair and makeup. Even at the ungodly class time of 8:30 a.m., there are a few who will have coordinating shoes, bag, and jewelry. The campus can look like a walking People spread of "What's In Now." Even the hippies seem amazingly put-together. Girls aren't the only ones who dress to impress, though; there are quite a few guys who make an attempt. All this fashion doesn't mean that you can't dress like a slob if you want to. It's a big school, so there is no major group that dominates the social scene like in high school, and it's pretty easy to find a group that meshes with your lifestyle, whether that means dressing to the nines or wearing pajamas to class. No one really cares what other people do, so just because a lot of people tend to wear the trends, doesn't mean you will be an outcast if you don't. Shopping in Montréal is great, so it's not hard to find really great stuff. Little import stores sell dozens of cheap colorful scarves, and those have become a favorite accessory with the more original dressers. Going out to a club, guys usually wear a button-down shirt and nice jeans if it's casual, khakis if it's not. Most clubs don't let people wear sneakers, so a comfortable pair of dress shoes is important. Girls wear nice jeans with dressy camisoles and strappy shoes or nice flats, but in general, girls can get away with not adhering to dress codes much easier than guys can.

McGill is represented in Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) by the McGill Redmen (men's) and the McGill Martlets(women's). Following a major restructuring of the varsity programme for the fall semester of 2010, McGill is currently home to 28 varsity teams. McGill's unique mascot, Marty the Martlet, was introduced during the 2005 Homecoming game,
The downtown McGill campus sport and exercise facilities include: the McGill Sports Centre (which includes the Tomlinson Fieldhouse and the Windsor Varsity Clinic), Molson Stadium, Memorial Pool, Tomlinson Hall, McConnell Arena, Forbes Field, many outdoor tennis courts and other extra-curricular arenas and faculties. The Macdonald Campus facilities, include an arena, a gymnasium, a pool, tennis courts, fitness centres and hundreds of acres of green space for regular use. The university's largest sporting venue, Molson Stadium, was constructed in 1914. Following an expansion project completed in 2010, it now seats just over 25,000, and is the current home field of the Montreal Alouettes.

  • 学校精神
McGill students are proud to go to McGill. There is an intense academic rivalry between McGill and University of Toronto, as the two schools shuffle between number one and number two spots on McLean's list for the top researching university. McGill students vehemently defend that not only are they academically superior, but that their campus and student body outweigh any advantage U of T may have. This remains to be seen, but there is a sense of accomplishment that most students feel by going to one of Canada's top universities. Another rivalry is between Concordia and McGill. Concordia is the other English-speaking university in Montréal, and many locals claim that it more truthfully represents the people of Montréal-whatever that means. Concordia tends to have more rivalry with McGill than the other way around, but there is a definite line of loyalty. As mentioned before, sports are not a huge deal here, but generally, any excuse for drinking and screaming at another group is welcome with open arms.

There are a few alternatives to McGill owned and run cafés. The Architecture Café used to be entirely student-run but due to financial reasons had to strike a management deal with McGill dining services in order to continue its operations. It still offers fair trade coffee and employs only students. Midnight Kitchen is a student organization that offers vegan food by donation weekdays at noon in Shatner. Shatner also holds a food court with various options, Café Supreme, Al-taib in Gert's, and Liquid Nutrition for smoothies. There is almost always a bake sale or somosa sale somewhere on campus. Free food is extremely easy to come by at McGill, as departmental events supplemented with refreshments, such as wine and cheese, occur frequently.

    • Molson, McConnell, and Gardner halls are often referred to as the Upper Residences, or "Upper Rez," because of their location on the northern end of campus.
    • Most people who attend McGill are residents of Montréal, making it more of a commuter school than a residential one. Also, only first-year students are guaranteed housing, making them the majority of residents living on campus.
    • McGill also has a First Peoples' House, a residence and lounge provided specifically for aboriginal students.
    • MORE houses are converted brownstones that house about 20 students each. There are two on University and three on Pine. Because of their small size, each house takes on a different flavor and reputation each year. However, they generally are the houses that students looking for a more independent lifestyle seek. Your dorm fellow does not live with you, and you are basically on your own. This can be great for some people-their ideal living situation. The small size of the house usually brings everyone really close together, for better or for worse.
    • Also on University is the Greenbriar, which operates under the same principle, except that it is an apartment building that holds 96 students. Rooms are apartment-style with a kitchen for each unit. Three Métro stops away near the Atwater market is Solin Hall, a larger apartment-style residence far away from campus. Both apartment-style residences tend to attract the more independent students. Students are not on a meal plan and rely on a common kitchen to cook their meals. Living in one of these can be amazing for the type of student who can't wait to move out of their parents' house and live on their own, but it's not for everyone.
    • Check everything out or call housing to get a better feel of which type of housing is right for you. Regardless of what you put as first choice, though, many students get their second, third, or even last, so where you live is really a matter of chance. If you really hate where you live, two weeks after moving in you can switch-plenty of students do, and it's really not that hard if you make the effort to talk to the housing office.

    • First-year, Second-year, Third-year, Fourth-year: McGill doesn't use terms like freshman or sophomore, they identify by year.
    • Frosh: McGill's orientation for first year students; bonding/drinking activities held the first week before school starts
    • The Ghetto: The area east of campus inhabited predominantly by students
    • Kraft Dinner: What Canadians call Kraft Macaroni and Cheese; a student dietary staple
    • Marks: Grades
    • Pre-drink: The Canadian term for "pregame"
    • Reading Week: McGill's spring break that usually occurs at the end of February
    • Rez: Short for residence, what McGill students call dorms
    • RVC: Royal Victoria College, the all-girls dorm
    • SSMU: The acronym for the Students' Society of McGill University, acts as a sort of student government/union (pronounced "smoo")
    • Upper Rez: The dorms on the hill
    • Write Exams: Take exams
  • 传统
    • Carnival: At the beginning of the winter semester, Arts, Science, and Management each put on their own faculty carnival. Students form teams to participate in a week of scheduled drinking events and debauchery. Management Carnival is notoriously insane, and with your deposit you receive a "puke suit" - decorated coveralls.
    • Frosh: At the end of August, McGill welcomes its newest class to a week of debauchery in Montréal. There are three different Froshes to engage in: faculty frosh, SSMU frosh, and Radical frosh. First are the faculty froshes, which are put on by each of the individual faculties. SSMU Frosh follows the specific faculty frosh and is open to everyone. Froshies play drinking games on the campus lawn, then go on endless pub crawls led by upperclassmen. This is McGill's idea of orientation. Rad Frosh is the socially conscious alternative. Instead of getting wasted on lower field, froshies get proactive, attending panel discussions, loft parties, tours, and workshops that address current social issues.
    • Open Air Pub: At the beginning of the fall semester, and the end of the winter semester, McGill has OAP with live music, cheap beer, and food on the lawn.
    • Reading Week: Don't be fooled by its name, this week of vacation is not study time. It is McGill's version of spring break and usually occurs at the end of February. Wealthier Canadians usually leave their American friends behind and escape to Cuba.
    • Ski Trip: Every January there is a weekend trip to Mount Tremblant that many students go on. There are also other ski weekends at different mountains, like Mount Ste-Anne, but Tremblant is by far the most popular.
    • St-Sulpice: Last day of classes, tons of people head to St-Sulpice, a bar with a great terrace to hang out before starting the summer.
  • 校园传说
There is a tunnel that connects the main campus to the residences on the hill.
  • 最喜欢做的事情
Eat biscotti while browsing through the bookstore; split a pitcher with some friends at Gert’s; play Frisbee on the lawn; learn kickboxing, ballet, or belly dancing at the gym; see a guest lecturer; or get cheap ice cream at Frostbites and lounge on the lawn. There is always something to do on campus. Because of the nearly infinite amount of clubs at McGill, there is at least one film screening, panel discussion, meeting, or fundraiser going on somewhere every day of the week. For those who don't feel like getting quite as involved, there are plenty of places to just hang out. There are numerous lounges around campus and in nice weather Lower Field is the place to chill and run into everyone you know or make new friends. At the beginning of each semester there are beer tents (OAP in fall and SnowAP in winter) that offer cheap beer and food on the field in the center of campus.

    • McGill has a small system of underground tunnels connecting various buildings on campus. These make it possible to go to all of your classes and even stop at the library without ever having to step outside.

If there is a club, there is almost definitely a party to go with it. Academic, ethnic, or interest, all organizations schedule fun parties that either meet on campus or go out to bars to celebrate their new publication, a winning debate, an upcoming election, or the fact that it’s Thursday. For an example, the Department of English Students Association hosts a wine and cheese party at the beginning of each year.
Club Listings
  • Korova

The new favorite of Montreal's hipsters, Korova is a dank, small 2nd floor bar with a dance floor. The décor includes booths with tables made from old school arcade games, a pool table, and saloon-style bathroom doors. The music is very eclectic and varies from night to night, but always anything but typical. Hipsters galore get up on tables, booths, and speakers or right next to the large windows overlooking St-Laurent and dance like there is no tomorrow.

  • Club Unity

Club Unity is a massive club with a beautiful rooftop terrace and bar. Three floors, each with a different style of music (retro, pop, and techno), play remixes to flashing lights and a fog machine. Located in the gay Village, this club is a spectacle and a ton of fun for not only GLBTQ, but all people looking for a crazy time. The first floor has a big stage where people can dance. In the corners are sofas for lounging and . . . other things. This place can get a little obscene, but it's all in good fun. The best gay club definitely, and one of the best clubs in general. Saturday night is "POPLIFE" night, featuring pop, top 40, and dance music, in addition to being a student night. A student ID doesn't grant access for free at the club, but the cover charge is free on Fridays between 9:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. and on Saturdays between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. (except for special events). There are specials for students with proper ID on Fridays and specials for everyone before midnight on Saturdays.

  • Tokyo

Tokyo is the place to be on Thursdays, and pretty decent on any other night of the week too. Seriously skilled local DJs spin epic mash-ups, top 40, and old school tracks. The best part about Tokyo is the year-round terrace (heated in the winter) equipped with a small bar and booth seating.

  • Orchid Nightclub and Lounge

Orchid is definitely one of the biggest nightclubs in Montréal. It's also got a lightshow and some of the best DJs in town, playing old school, R&B, funk, and hip-hop. The posh decor on the inside complements the music for one of the best spots to party in Montréal.

  • Café Campus

Café Campus is located right off of the main, perpendicular to St-Laurent where there is the Belle Province. A former UQAM hangout, it is now an even mix of Anglos and Francos, except on Francophone Sundays when they only play French music. Each night of the week has a different theme, and the weekends are just a good mix. The DJs are pretty good and very consistent. They play the pop dance tunes, along with some of the more groovable alternative songs of the moment. They usually throw in a little Latin music and some old songs from the `70s and `80s. It's not an uppity place at all-people just go to dance, and no one really cares if you're "in" or "out." It can get really crowded on Tuesday, so go early. The bar has some great specials, like alternating beer specials. This is not the place to order a martini, but it's probably the most fun you can have dancing. Downstairs is le Petit Campus, a bar that plays live music most nights.

    57 rue Prince-Arthur Est.

    (514) 844-1010

  • 737 Altitude

The fact that this club is located in the financial district is the first tip-off that it's lame. It's at the top of one of the tallest buildings in Montréal, which makes the view spectacular. McGill loves to host parties there; when it's a McGill party, it is worth it to go for the view alone. Other than that, the music is bad, the people are overdressed, and the layout is almost maze-like, making an already packed club even more claustrophobic. It is also home to some of the sketchiest clientele around. Don't go unless it's a McGill function and you can get free cover. It's not worth the money.

    1 Place Ville Marie

  • 1234

1234 was once a funeral home, but is now a banging club! Laser shows, electro and house music, and lots and lots of dirty dancing are what you will usually find here.

  • B-Side

B-Side is a small venue with no cover located at the center of St-Laurent's nightlife. Hence, it is immensely popular, hence it is notoriously exclusive. If you do manage to get in, you will enjoy fun, classic oldies that everyone in the place sings along and dances like crazy to. A night at B-Side is never complete without at least one James Brown track, "You Make Me Wanna Shout", and girls dancing on the bar.

    3616 Boulevard Saint-Laurent

    (514) 844-8883

    www.barlebside.com

  • A-Side

B-Side's neighbor, formerly Lodge, is decorated like a log cabin on the inside. Monday 90's Nights are a favorite of many students and a great excuse to break out the neon track suits and ugly sweaters.

    (514) 849-6513

  • Peel Pub

If you ask a cab driver where you should go as a tourist to drink, they will say Peel Pub. This is exactly why you should not go there. Besides tourists and freshmen, no one goes there. It is the laughing stock of bars to Montréal natives. They do have really good specials, like dollar shooters night, but the bar is dank and crowded, and the service is really rude. And who wants to party with tourists anyway?

    1107 St-Catherine W.

    (514) 844-6769

  • La Distillerie

Small, and very low-key, La Distillerie has made a name for itself from its unique drinks. Their incredibly delicious and incredibly alcoholic cocktails are served in huge jars. Happy hour here is unbeatable: a Mason Jar (1 liter) cocktail for only $12. Go with a group of friends and split (or hog to yourself) one of these delicious creations.

  • Vinyl

If you're looking for a dank little dive bar, Vinyl is the place for you. Dark walls, antique furniture, and aged lighting fixtures kind of make you feel like you're partying in your grandma's attic, but come Friday nights Vinyl is anything but dull. Student DJs play epic classic rock, 80s and metal tracks, and things get progressively crazier as the night goes on. Crowd surfing, moshing, punching holes in the walls are not rare occurrences and are completely tolerated by the staff.

    2109 Rue Bleury

    (514) 844-7786

  • Sky Pub

The bottom level of this three-floor complex has a much louder and younger crowd than above. Upstairs is a great place to order food. There is a happy hour on weekdays and Martini Tuesdays. The music is kept low, so it's a good place to go with a date or find a new one, depending on your situation.

    1474 St-Catherine St. E.

    (514) 529-6969

  • Foufounes Électriques

Don't let the giant tarantula and creepy metal gate scare you away. Foufs, whose name roughly translates to "Electric Ass", is an amazing bar. It has three humongous floors, and every night of the week has a different theme with different music and drink specials. Thursdays are ladies' nights with a $4 cover which gets you 4 free drink tickets. The first floor is the chill floor, equipped with pool and foosball tables and ample seating. The second floor has a patio and even more seating, and the third floor has a huge dance floor, stage, and cave-like bar. Because of its location, it tends to attract a lot of local francophones, but this bar has serious attitude and should not be skipped.

  • Benelux

Due to its proximity to campus and chill atmosphere, Benelux is also quite popular, especially on Wednesdays. It has a good selection of beer and offers pretty good food as well. It used to be a bank, so there's a private back room in the old vault.

    245 Rue Sherbrooke Ouest

  • Bar des Pins

Bar des Pins is a Montréal staple. It's been around forever, and because it's so near campus, it's an odd mix between aging drunkards and university drunkards-in-training. It's one of the few authentic dive bars, not a bar made up to look like a dive. The bathroom is so gross you worry about contracting a disease from the toilet seat. Still, it's a ton of fun when you go with your friends. It serves cheap beer and only cheap beer, and only accepts cash. There's pool and video gambling, and a TV that shows whatever sports game is hot that night. During the World Series playoffs, it became a haven for New York and Boston students away from their home turf to bring the rivalry to Canada. Cheap and a good time, this is a great weekday bar for hanging out with your friends.

    3714 Parc Ave.

    (514) 845-6760

  • Brutopia

On the far south side of Crescent, Brutopia has some of the best beer around. The ambience is kind of like a cool artsy pub, with small tables and pictures on the wall. Live bands, open-mic night, and even a trivia night make every night here a good time. Their pints are $7.50, which seems steep until you taste their delicious raspberry beer. The least Crescent-like of all the bars on Crescent, this bar is fun, not flashy, and a great place to go anytime.

    1215 Crescent St.

    (514) 393-9277

  • Bifteck

For some reason, this place is hugely popular and apparently quite famous. The bar itself is decent-it has pretty cheap drink deals, two floors of really crowded seating, and a couple of pool tables. You also get free popcorn with your drink order, a great snack for drunk people. Essentially, it's nothing special, and this is what it is famous for. When bands such as the Foo Fighters and Against Me! come to town, for some reason this is where they choose to party.
