    • Cornell is the only Ivy League university that is also in the state's federal land-grant institution. The motto in English is "I would found an institution where any person can find instruction in any study" (Ezra Cornell). The board of trustees includes student, faculty, and staff voting members. It was the first among all U.S. colleges and universities to allow undergraduates to borrow books from its libraries.
    • On October 8, 1997, an astonishingly large, voluptuous pumpkin appeared nestled atop Cornell's McGraw Tower. The pumpkin was thought to weigh up to 60 lbs. and sat pinned to the 173-foot tower for several weeks. It was an incredible prank that made national news.
    • Cornell's Uris Hall displays brains in jars. One of the brains is of murderer Edward Rulloff (now the name of a Collegetown restaurant). Also among the 70 pickled brains is a pickled piece of the pumpkin mentioned above.

There are different student groups dedicated to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning students' issues, as well as a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Resource Center on campus. There are also numerous classes in the Feminist, Gender, Sexuality Studies program.
Political activity is common on Cornell's campus. In addition to the standard Cornell Democrats and College Republicans, there are a number of smaller social-justice-oriented clubs on campus, focusing on issues ranging from anti-war to the environment to immigrants' rights. All of these groups make their views known through protests, information campaigns, and other activities. Ithaca is known to be a very liberal town, and this trend tends to influence the campus political climate as well.
Students are from various socio-economic backgrounds. There's a natural impetus to assume that the majority of the students, due to the high price of an Ivy League university, are wealthy, but there is a huge disparity of economic status on campus. Many students are not from high-income backgrounds, and they may feel marginalized by Cornell due to the high prices for books, housing, and tuition.
Cornell has a large Jewish population, as well as many Christians, Catholics, Hindus, and Muslims. There are a variety of clubs on campus, as well as services at Sage Chapel, a non-denominational house of worship on the campus. Special holiday-themed activities, such as Christmas caroling or Shabbat 1000+, are common.

  • Did You Know?
    • The Greek scene varies considerably, ranging from typical, social-oriented chapters to service and pre-professional fraternities.
    • Joining a fraternity or sorority can open new avenues in your social experience at Cornell. Most chapters have their own parties, formals, and football tailgates. They also join in all-Greek events. Being a part of the Greek organization gives you the opportunity to meet and develop friendships with people from all walks of life.
    • Some members actively participate in community service activities in and around the greater Ithaca area. During Rush Week, girls visit each sorority on campus to meet with sisters in order to find an ideal match. Guys, on the other hand, visit fraternities of their choice for "smokers" during the daytime.

Cornell's diverse student body affords the chance for various unique interactions with many groups of guys and girls from a wide array of different backgrounds. It's not hard to meet friendly students with similar interests as yours. In general, the people at Cornell are very social, and you'll always find fraternity parties and bars packed to the brim with a very good ratio of guys to girls.
At Cornell, you'll find a little bit of everything: a lot of non-committal, random hookups as well as many serious, long-term relationships. If you're looking for an evening fling, it's not hard to find, especially at an after-hours fraternity party. Interestingly, an estimated 75 percent of couples who leave Cornell together end up getting married. So if you're still in that relationship at graduation, then carefully consider the possibilities of a wedding in the near future!
Meeting guys and girls is not difficult at Cornell, especially since you'll find yourself in close-knit groups during sections and seminars. Initially for freshmen, the best place to meet is in the dorms and at the dining halls which promote a relaxed and social ambiance. Parties, although less conducive to good conversation, are also places to meet people. Collegetown and Ithaca bars, like the Chapter House, are popular student hangouts as well.
Most students dress down for class, favoring warmer, bulkier clothing in the cold Ithaca weather. When going out, fashions range from casual to dressy. Fraternities and sororities have semi-annual formal events, which necessitate fancier clothing.

All Cornellians undoubtedly take pride in their school. Especially as alumni, former students feel even more connected to the school after having put things in perspective and reflected upon past experiences. However, students don't necessarily have a tremendous amount of "ra-ra" spirit in support of its athletic teams. School spirit seems to be more contained to specific groups like colleges (the School of Hotel Administration), departments (applied economics and management), organizations and clubs, and fraternities and sororities.
Some sporting events are free, but the more popular sports (football, basketball, ice hockey, lacrosse, soccer, indoor track, volleyball, lacrosse, and wrestling), you have to pay for tickets. For Cornell students, the prices are low, around $3. Most can be purchased online at www.athletics.cornell.edu/tickets or over the phone (607) 254-BEAR. The notable exception is ice hockey tickets, which is, by far, Cornell's most popular sport. Tickets per game are around $18 for Cornell students, but season tickets are quite expensive ($171/graduate student, $247/undergraduate) and somewhat difficult to obtain, requiring students to wait in line for hours at Lynah Rink. Most students will split a batch of season tickets.

    • Dragon Day: Every year, the architecture students make a huge dragon to parade around campus in and then they burn it. Some years, the engineers also make a large Phoenix, and the event becomes a contest. It begins when the architecture students sell Dragon Day T-shirts. The night before, the architecture students beautifully toilet paper the arts quad. The next day, the parade of the dragon begins.

It used to be an unstructured event full of very drunk students, but now that it is organized by the University, only those over 21 can easily drink. On Slope Day, there are vendors selling food, a carnival area, and famous bands playing (Rusted Root, OAR, Kanye West).
    • Cornell has one of the highest suicide rates. This is not true. It does have some suicides, like any school, but in proportion to the student population, the rate is not excessively higher than at other schools.
    • If a couple walks around all of Beebe Lake holding hands they will get engaged.
    • If you are asked for a kiss at midnight on the suspension bridge and say no, the bridge will fall into the gorge.
    • When a virgin crosses the arts quad at midnight the statues of AD White and Ezra Cornell get up and meet each other in the center of the Quad to shake hands and congratulate each other on the chastity of Cornellians. (I don't know anyone who has tried it, but there are footprints on the quad, so maybe it's true).

Catch a suntan on Libe Slope, eat lunch at the Terrace, examine the stars at Fuertes Observatory, have drinks at the Regent Lounge, meet friends at Libe Caf&eacute, see a movie at Cornell Cinema, watch a hockey game in Lynah Rink, watch the sunset atop the Johnson Museum of Fine Art, work out at Helen Newman, or listen to the Clocktower Chimes Concert Thanks to its large size, Cornell's campus hosts many activities. In addition to the huge list of activities sponsored by the many clubs on campus (including dances, a capella shows, game nights, and comedy shows), Cornell has a movie theater, bowling alley, rock-climbing wall, gym, theater, and hockey rink. Cornell students may enjoy these activities either at reduced rates or for free, depending on the event.
