Best Of
  • 1
Baltimore is a great mid-size city that offers many entertainment options. Washington, D.C., is an easy day trip away.
  • 2
Despite being in the city, Hopkins is actually very beautiful and green. When on campus, you never ever feel like you're in a city.
  • 3
Johns Hopkins University has a great academic reputation. This reputation helps students network and find jobs right out of college.
  • 4
Lack of a general core curriculum. Individual majors have requirements, but there are no courses that everyone takes.
  • 5
Off-campus housing is affordable. Baltimore is a city with a low cost of living.
  • 6
Research opportunities abound. If you want to do research as an undergraduate, Hopkins is a great choice.
  • 7
Students organize symposia and lectures with world-class speakers. These speakers discuss topics from engineering to international relations to film.
  • 8
Transportation around the city is quick, easy, and cheap. This allows students to explore the many benefits of Baltimore.
  • 9
You can walk anywhere on campus and to almost all off-campus housing within 15 minutes.
  • 10
All of the dorm and food options are well above average. Hopkins students are spoiled by this.
Worst Of
  • 1
The competitive nature of the students. The school is so competitive that a large number of students rarely take a break from studying. As the school year drags on, you begin to see the same people in the library.
  • 2
Hopkins lacks traditional school spirit. Students are proud of the Hopkins name and reputation, but not its athletics.
  • 3
Many students feel that professors are more concerned with their own research than with helping the students they teach.
  • 4
The on-campus meal plan leaves a lot to be desired. Although there's a wide selection of food offered, students dislike the meal plan requirement for freshmen and sophomores. It is expensive, and the dining halls repeat food choices often.
  • 5
Parking is a headache. Even when friends come to visit for a day or two, it is almost impossible to find them a parking spot.
  • 6
There are unsafe neighborhoods surrounding Hopkins, and new students need to learn where they should and should not walk.
  • 7
Tuition is extremely expensive. Although financial aid packages and scholarships lower the burden, most students graduate with large amounts of debt.
  • 8
With the name recognition attached, students expect to have an adequate health and wellness center. The Student Health & Wellness Center, however, is famous around campus for misdiagnosing student illnesses.
  • 9
Although there are around 6,000 undergrads, it often feels like you always see and deal with the same people.
  • 10
Grade deflation makes it difficult to maintain a high GPA, though there are always exceptions. Very academically rigorous.

    • Get involved right away. As a freshman, make sure you join as many student organizations as you can. Hopkins students are extremely motivated. The more student organizations you join, the quicker you will assimilate into college.
    • If a class is extremely difficult, go to your teaching assistant's office hours or even get a tutor. There are hundreds of people willing to give you extra help if you need it. Make sure you use all of the available resources.

  • Tips for Getting In
    • Have an eagerness to volunteer.
    • Participate in community services.
    • Play a sport.
    • Show that you're well-rounded and not just a good student.
    • Write very good essays creatively.
    • Apply for a Wilson Fellowship, even if you don't feel like you have a perfect idea. Advisers let you change your topic at any point. It's an incredible opportunity to travel and do independent research. The fellowships are given to both humanities and science students, so don't feel like it needs to be a new breakthrough in research. In the past years, one person made a film, another examined landmine detection technology, and a third discussed spiritual practices of world religious leaders.
    • Just because many of the faculty are renowned professors doesn't actually mean that they're good teachers or that they even care about teaching undergrads. This isn't to say every professor is bad, but some are obviously more interested in the graduate students and their research labs.
    • Many people arrive, planning to have a bad experience because they have absolutely no desire to attend Hopkins. They only ended up at Hopkins as a fall-back plan.
    • Spread out the difficulty among your semesters. Every major has difficult classes. Try to take those in different semesters so you're not too busy and worked up.
    • Study abroad! Hopkins has a great study abroad office, and the school encourages all students to embrace such a great opportunity. In order to qualify, however, you must keep your grades up and stay on top of your major required courses. Many students are not able to study abroad because of their poor academic record.
    • Take some of the difficult core classes for your major first semester freshman year when you have covered grades. It will help your GPA and reduce some of the pressure involved in those classes. Or, you can take the opposite route if you are unsure about your major and take a list of classes for your first semester within various fields that may potentially interest you.
    • The workload is difficult, and Hopkins professors are very demanding. Professors expect the world from you, but they do not provide much support or extra help. Unlike many of the Ivy League schools, there isn't any grade inflation at Hopkins.
    • Until you are 21, it is difficult to have a great social life. Fraternity parties are fun, but going to one every weekend gets old quickly.
    • Use all of the resources you can when picking classes. The faculty advisers are superb, and most upperclassmen are willing to dish out some advice. There are a handful of classes you should definitely steer clear of. The earlier you find these courses, the better. If you end up in over your head, you can drop the course. Remember-first semester courses are pass/fail.
Call (410) 516-8171 between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. The office requests two weeks' advance notice when scheduling an interview. Students may request on-campus interviews from February of their junior year until November of their senior year. Due to the high volume of requests, however, they cannot always guarantee availability. All interviews take place in the admissions building in Mason Hall.
Any visitor may participate in a guided tour of Johns Hopkins. Information sessions and tours begin in the lobby of Mason Hall. Reservations are only required if your group has 20 or more people. Large groups are asked to call (410) 516-8171 at least two weeks in advance. Those needing special accommodations or disability access are also asked to call a week ahead. The information sessions are offered at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on most weekdays, followed by guided tours at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. For an up-to-date guided tour schedule, visit apply.jhu.edu/visit/guidedtours.html.
An overnight visit is your chance to get a behind-the-scenes look at campus life by staying overnight with a current student as your host. Visits are encouraged for prospective and current applicants during the fall, and accepted applicants during the spring. Students can visit on select Sunday evenings and weekends during fall and spring semesters and select dates in conjunction with on-campus programs.

The JHU Career Center offers many services to students, but students commonly complain that career counselors are only interested in helping students who know which field they want to enter; have an idea of what you are interested in before meeting with a counselor. Because Hopkins has so many successful alumni, don't forget that networking with them is a great way to get an internship or job. Go to the career center first semester to beat the crowd when trying to find out about summer internships. Although career fairs are held on the recreation center basketball courts, don't forget to wear business attire, and bring many copies of your resumé.

Generally, Johns Hopkins is unfairly judged. JHU is a school with many serious students, but Baltimore is a city with a lot of fun clubs and bars, which creates a "work hard, play hard" environment. There really isn't any social scene Sunday through Wednesday, but Thursday through Saturday is a blast. During freshman year, there's a lot of interaction between the sexes because all freshman housing is coed. Greek life isn't dominant, but the fraternities are right off campus and throw fun parties. The city is definitely a blast once you are 21, but there are clubs that are 18-and-up to get into, as well. If you are willing to take a 10-minute cab ride, you can even reap the benefits of hanging out with cute members of the opposite sex at both Loyola and Towson. Overall, Johns Hopkins has a great social scene, as long as you don't trap yourself in the library.
Hookups are most common freshman year, especially in the AMRs. When students want to hook up with someone they don't know as well, they often go to frat parties. Many students enter Hopkins with boyfriends or girlfriends at other schools, and prefer these relationships because they take up less time. Time is the major barrier that prevents more students from wanting relationships. Relationships do occur, however, usually arising from friendships in dorms, classes, or extracurricular activities.
The daily dress code is very casual. Both guys and girls wear jeans and khakis to class and around campus. Guys generally wear T-shirts or button-down shirts, and girls usually wear T-shirts, sweaters, or tank tops. Because many students have professional internships, it is also not uncommon to see sport coats or skirts around campus, especially on Thursdays and Fridays, when many students don't have classes. When going to bars or parties, girls usually dress up more than guys, wearing high heels, skirts or nice pants, and cute shirts.

Lacrosse is, by far, the most popular sport and is Division I. Many of the games are televised on ESPNU. The Blue Jays are one of the best teams in the nation every year!
  • Most Overlooked Teams
The fencing team gets very little recognition. Also, the baseball team has had an excellent record in the past few years, and was one of the top Division III teams in the nation, despite frequently playing home games in front of crowds numbering in the teens.
Overall, students at Hopkins are not particularly spirited. There are some events, however, that students get excited about. The only sport that warrants student excitement is lacrosse. The activity that sparks the most interest is a cappella, with the singing groups frequently performing to standing-room-only crowds. Students also get very spirited about their majors, often comparing themselves favorably to equivalent majors at other schools. School spirit drops off noticeably during exam time, when students lose interest in almost everything but their studies.

None-technically. PJ's Pub is a block off campus and is always filled with people watching the game, having wings, and drinking beer. Charles Village Pub is another block east of that; it's your traditional pub. Two blocks southwest of CVP is Maxie's, and you can also grab a beer next door to CVP at Ledo Pizza.

Every year, the school undertakes several green initiatives to compete nationally with other elite schools. Concentrating on recycling, limiting electricity, minimizing the use of plastic are all campus-wide initiatives taken by faculty, staff, and students.

    • IFC: Interfaith Center
    • IFP: "Introduction to Fiction and Poetry" class
    • IS/IR: International studies/international relations major
    • MSE: Milton S. Eisenhower Library, the main library on campus
    • The Shush Lady: As the community liaison between the students and the residents, this woman is known for breaking up parties before hop cops and Baltimore city cops come. She's also very active on Twitter, keeping students up-to-date with news about the area.
    • Uni Mini: University Market, great place to get a late-night sandwich
    • WaWa: Nickname for the fraternity Alpha Delta Phi
    • Library Streaking: Every semester during finals, the Outdoor Society runs naked through the main campus library one evening to break the monotony and seriousness of studying.
    • Lighting of the Quads: Every winter, right before finals, a cappella groups perform on the main quad in front of faculty and students, as the University president leads the countdown of the quad lighting up with festive lights. Hot chocolate and refreshments are always served, as well.
    • The Seal: No one can walk across the University seal located in the main entrance to Gilman Hall. Tradition says that if they are a prospective student, they won't be admitted to Hopkins. If they are an undergraduate, they will not graduate.
    • Spring Fair: Spring Fair is held every April. It is the one event that draws almost every student from Hopkins outside. There is a concert by a national act, student plays, and student musical performances. Craft vendors come from around the Mid-Atlantic area, and student groups sell goods or services. In addition, the beer garden is popular with students who are 21 years old or older.
    • One of the dining halls was shut down for 14 health violations, including having rat droppings in the food-preparation area. The most disturbing aspect of this legend is that it's true-ask upperclassmen if they remember when it happened.
    • Students claim that there is a set of underground steam tunnels that link the basements of various buildings on campus.
    • Supposedly, there are hidden labs underneath Bloomberg, the physics building, where secret government experiments are conducted. In addition, there's a room in the building with a smaller-than-normal door set about a foot off the floor with a sign that claims it is the Monopole Storage Room. (A monopole should be impossible to create or store.) Graduate students become extremely evasive when asked about it.
There are several theater groups, many a cappella groups, an improv comedy group, several bands, and a symphony. Because there are so many student arts groups, there are performances almost every weekend. The recreation center's basketball courts and climbing wall are popular places for students to meet. When the weather is warm enough, students gather in the quads and on "the beach" to enjoy the sun. Many students, however, choose to spend time in the library instead of hanging out at other places on campus.

There's a group for each minority group, for political leanings or religions, for tutoring inner-city children, for moviegoers, for raising environmental awareness or cancer awareness. There are also several outdoors groups that take several trips per year to go hiking, climbing, and kayaking. You're bound to find a club for you, and one that has a collection of great people.

  • Howl at the Moon

Howl at the Moon is a bar with a unique theme. They have dueling pianos set up center stage, between the tables and the bar. A dance floor covers the space between the entrance and pianos. Early on, they can play some annoying stuff, but as the night progresses, they get a full band going and play some good stuff. They are also more than willing to take requests if the price is right.

  • Maxie's Pizza & Bar

Top floor (ground floor) is the "grille" part of Maxie's where you can get delicious pizza, burgers, and other food until 2 a.m. The basement is a nice bar with TVs, loud music, and a door leading outside to a courtyard that is awesome in nice weather.

  • PJ's Pub

A hole-in-the-wall sort of place located right next to Wolman Hall, across the street from campus. Students who don't like Charles Village Pub often go to PJ's. Many students also order PJ's pizza. It's not great, but it's cheap, and since it's right next door, it's easy to do pickup and not have to tip for delivery. The TVs generally have sporting events on.

  • The Brewer's Art

The Brewer's Art is located in a large Mount Vernon townhouse where they brew their own beer and provide a variety of very good, but highly-priced, dishes. The entire first floor is occupied by the upscale restaurant. Downstairs is the somewhat sketchier bar area, at least compared to the nice restaurant upstairs. Their homemade beers are pretty good.

  • Charles Village Pub

One of the most popular hangouts at Hopkins. It's one block from campus, has reasonable prices, and generally is showing a sports game or two on TV. The food is greasy, and exactly what someone would expect from a bar, especially one right next to a college campus. Many students go here for the appetizers as well as the drinks.

  • The Greene Turtle

The Greene Turtle is a bar and eatery with multiple televisions and a pub-type atmosphere. The food is actually one of the focuses, and it's better than you'd normally expect from a bar. This is the type of place that kind of has two sections-one for diners and one for bar patrons. It's not a place where you generally see a whole lot of Hopkins students, though.
