    • Don't party too much. Freedom is great, but just because you can go out and get wasted every night does not mean you should.
    • Don't study all the time. Yale is a strong academic school, but it is also so much more. What you can learn about life is often just as valuable as what you can learn about astronomy. Remember, there is only so much information your brain can retain at once.
    • Don't take on too much. As a freshman, there's a temptation to do everything, because everything seems so cool. But in the end, no matter how cool all 15 of your extracurricular activities are, they will seem like the bane of your existence when you get too busy.
    • Explore different majors before committing to your (parents') dream of becoming a doctor, lawyer, or engineer. There are so many options out there, and Yale is a great place to discover some of them.
    • Get involved! The student activities fair during Camp Yale allows students to browse possible activities: theatre, volunteer work, belly dancing, bagpiping, a cappella, mock combat groups, orchestras, political parties, student publications, etc. Yale has almost everything, and if there's not an organization to suit you, start up you own (Yale will give you money!).
    • Go to Masters' Teas. These opportunities to spend the afternoon drinking tea and eating little sandwiches while listening to great people speak is invaluable. Some recent guests include singer and songwriter Carole King, Actor Bronson Pinchot, Writer Tobias Wolff, and political commentator Arianna Huffington.
    • See your freshman counselor as the resource he or she is. This senior knows the ins and outs of Yale and can give you advice on everything from picking good classes to taking your parents out when they visit. They also remember what it is like to be a freshman, and they truly want to help you through it.
    • Try to learn what type of class structure suits you best. Do you like large lectures, or do you crave personal interaction with your professors? Do you want to talk or listen? Do you like to take tests or write papers?
  • 你知道吗
    • Sterling Memorial Library is the second biggest college library in the country.
    • All tenured professors of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences teach undergraduate courses.
    • There is no traditional credit system at Yale; instead, students must complete 36 equally weighted courses.
    • In 2010, the US news and World Report ranked Yale number three overall, closely following Harvard and Princeton Universities.
    • The Fall 2008 acceptance rate was 8.6% for undergraduates.

  • Tips for Getting In
    • Be sincere and genuine in your application and interview. You don't have to put on a front. You DO need to express yourself as you.
    • Be yourself in your application, in your essays, in your interview, during your visit. Because, after all, Yale is looking for about 1,200 individuals, not a pre-made mold.
    • Consider recruitment if you're good at a sport. It's a great way to find your niche at Yale and have a built-in social and support system.
    • Cover the basics: get good grades, take AP/IB/honors classes, do well on standardized tests, volunteer your time, be in extracurriculars. Do your best at these things and you can consider a whole range of college options.
    • Distinguish yourself. Whether in arts, sports, volunteer work, or your job, do it all the way and let yourself stand out.
    • If you excell in fine or performing arts, consider sending a supplement to your application to show the admissions committee exactly what it is you do. Record a CD or photocopy a painting.
    • In your essay, whatever you do, don't talk about academics! After a certain caliber of excellence, your academics cease to matter in the admissions process.
    • Let the admissions committee know why you are particularly interested in Yale. Why do you really want to attend? A certain major? Resources? The atmosphere? Why Yale instead of another school?
    • Obtain recommendations from teachers who are not necessarily your favorite "cute and fuzzy" kind. Sometimes, the teacher whose class you've struggled in can say the best and most true things about you. Don't be afraid!
    • Visit campus before you apply (if possible) to see if you really love the way Yale feels. Just because you like Handsome Dan (our mascot) and look great in Bulldog Blue, doesn't mean you want to apply/attend sight-unseen.
    • Whatever activities you do-rock climbing, belly dancing, synthesizer-playing-do it passionately and excellently. Then tell Yale all about it!
  • 在去学校之前应该知道的事情
    • Don't pack too much. You do not need your entire ballerina figurine collection! But you will need lots of lamps (some buildings at Yale have very bad overhead lighting), a shower basket, rugs, posters, and lots of underwear (no one wants to do laundry).
    • During the winter, New Haven can get colder than you think.
    • No matter how much you like a class, odds are you won't go if it is before 9:30 a.m.
    • Not everyone is a genius. But yeah, some people are.
    • Yale students aren't that intimidating.
    • You can do anything you want at Yale. If you want a class that is restricted to juniors and seniors, plead and beg if you have to. Your enthusiasm will win you a spot. If you want to travel abroad but you do not have the money, just apply for grants or ask for financial aid. If you're creative enough, there is a possibility they could cave and let you go.
  • 访谈与信息会话
Information sessions and campus tours are offered Monday through Saturday. Check out the Office of Undergraduate Admissions for times.

Applicants can choose to schedule an on-campus or local interview. Information about the interview process is provided after your Yale application is received.
  • 校园旅行
Campus Tours are offered Monday-Friday at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m. Call for holiday schedule. Special tours by appointment.
  • 探视
Overnight visits for accepted students can be arranged through the Admissions office. Yale also hosts Bulldog Days for accepted students. During a couple of days in April, you will be able to experience the life of a college student. You can not only stay in a dorm room (remember a sleeping bag), but you can eat in the dining halls, attend classes, and meet other Yale prospective students, faculty, and deans. Expect to receive an invitation with your acceptance package.
  • Campus Map
  • 校园全景
  • Did You Know?
    • Each April, admitted students are encouraged to attend Bulldog Days, a great chance to meet other members of your Yale class and to experience the richeness that Yale has to offer.
    • Experienced tour guides will take you around campus and give you an idea of what life at Yale is really like. Make sure to check out the statue of Nathan Hale ("I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country") and the Beinecke Library building.
    • Visiting high school students are known as "pre-frosh" and can visit Yale any time of the year. Pre-frosh students can be hosted overnight by Yalies who demonstrate to high-schoolers what it means to be a Yalie. Pre-frosh students can visit classes, eat in the dining halls, meet with professors, and talk with students.

    • Don't forget that while money is a helpful thing to have on hand, it can be much more gratifying (and resume-boosting) to volunteer your time. Yalies are very involved in community service in New Haven. Options include tutoring kids in under-privileged areas, working with the homeless, singing in nursing homes, and working at the Yale Farm.
    • Finding a summer job, internship, or career can be an incredibly overwhelming experience, especially when you have no idea what you want to or can do. This is where Undergraduate Career Services steps in. While they can't do the deciding for you, they offer a variety of resources from personal guidance appointments to job databases, career fairs, and on-campus interview programs.
    • Good at math, writing, or a language? Work as a tutor and make money helping other Yalies master concepts and finish problem sets.
    • On-campus jobs are the best and easiest way to make money at Yale. There are tons of opportunities to do interesting things and get paid. Students work in the libraries, as docents for Yale's museums, as research assistants, as master's aides, and even as paid choir members. Many students work as part of their financial aid package.

  • 同志骄傲大游行
Yale is very supportive of its gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender students. The LGBT Co-Op at Yale provides a great support base and offers numerous educational and social events for all students, including films, discussions, concerts, and the all-popular LGBT Annual Ball. Yale also hosts a Queer Resource Center and offers peer counseling resources.
  • 政治活动
In general, the University and the student body tend to lean to the left-hand side of the political spectrum. However, there is a great amount of political diversity and open-mindedness. Most notable amongst the political groups is the Yale Political Union, the nation's oldest and most respected student debating society. Members of the YPU include the Liberal Party, the Party of the Left, the Progressive Party, the Independent Party, the Conservative Party, the Tory Party, and the Party of the Right. In addition, some students are involved in local politics, with Yalies frequently serving as Aldermen and board members in New Haven.
  • 经济地位
Due to an increase in financial aid and Yale's determined efforts to increase economic diversity, the student body now comes from a wide variety of socio-economic backgrounds. Most Yalies are on some kind of financial aid, and many are on full support. In years past, Yale was known for its legacies, however, in recent times their presence has diminished significantly. Legacies are never guaranteed admission to Yale and are expected to be as academically proficient as any other admitted student.
  • 最寻常的地区
Yale was originally founded under religious principles, and the University continues to be supportive of all religions. The primary religions are Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Bahá'i Faith, and Unitarian Universalism. All of these faiths have various student organizations that sponsor events throughout the year. The Chaplain's Office is a highly visible organization on campus that connects various religious groups through education and outreach (and offers free ice cream!). In addition, the Divinity School for graduates hosts many opportunities for religious discussions.
  • 校园内的少数俱乐部
Yale is the place to celebrate diversity, including cultural and ethnic heritage. Organizations on campus include the Black Student Alliance, Asian American Students Alliance, Ballet Folklorico Mexicano, International Students Organization, NAACP, and many other groups celebrating countries from China and Cuba to Israel and Poland. These groups host meals, parties, holidays, performances, and events that are very popular.

    • Some Yalies might suggest the a cappella groups serve as an equivalent for Greek life. Like most fraternity and sorority pledges, the singing groups' potential members go through an intense Rush and initiation process. The a cappella culture is highly visible during the year, performing jams and concerts each semester. One of the highlights of October is the incredible Tap Night rush across Old Campus as groups pick their new members.
    • Yale is known for its underground network of secret societies. There are over 10 prominent groups including Skull and Bones, Berzelius, Book and Snake, Elihu, Society of St. Anthony Hall, and Wolf's Head. The groups often act as replacements to Greek life.

  • 社会科学
Yalies are truly interesting people. The social scene at Yale is incredibly varied and fulfilling. The residential college system makes it easy to make connections between students. By transforming Yale into smaller social units, the colleges make interactions less overwhelming and intimidating. They also sponsor social activities (dances, study breaks, movie nights, and the like) that provide great opportunities to make new friends. Also, campus organizations provide a place to meet people with similar interests, from politics to music.
  • 同盟或者恋爱关系
It really depends on what you want. If you want to hook up, chances are you can find someone if you go to the right places. However, there are plenty of Yalies looking for the love and support that relationships bring. It really comes down to your own personal choices and what you're looking for.
  • 与男生/女生碰面的最好的地方
At Yale, students study hard and party hard, so most people meet either in academic settings or at bars, clubs, and parties. Classes and clubs provide a setting in which you can slowly get to know someone and become friends first. As a bonus, you know off the bat that you have something in common such as a love for Russian literature or similar political beliefs. While academic connections often flourish into serious relationships, most students meet each other at bars, clubs, and parties. In drunken hazes, students dance, kiss, and sometimes go home with each other, but these hookups rarely develop further and often result in awkward sightings in the future.
  • 着装礼仪
There is no all-prevalent style at Yale. Instead, everybody does their own thing, from hipster to punk to blah to preppy. One might suggest that the only time there is a uniform look is during finals, when most people walk around in their pajamas or sweats. In general, however, most students at Yale look fairly put together. Students enjoy shopping at Urban Outfitters, J. Crew, American Apparel, Laila Rowe, and Salvo in New Haven. And don't forget that Yale sweatshirt and scarf!

    • Thinking of attending a certain Boston-based Ivy League (which shall remained un-named)? It is a fact universally acknowledged that Yalies are far more attractrive than the students of our northern rival!

  • Visitation Policies
Yale doesn't have any restrictions on visitation. However, the policy doesn't appear to result in abuse of the system. Most Yalies are too busy to host friends often; when they do, it's usually because their friends from other schools are visiting Yale for conferences, academic events, or joint concerts. Of course, there is always a serious crunch for floor space during the Yale/Harvard game weekend.
  • Did You Know?
As befits an academic institution where most of the professors make their living on their ideas, Yale upholds strict policies on plagarism and illegal obtainment of resources. This means that there is strict policing of illegal downloads, so think twice before illegally downloading music or movies.

  • 学校精神
Students at Yale are proud to be there and they share it! Eli pride extends beyond athletics into academics, facilities, and social life. Yale gear is popular all year around because everyone looks good in Bulldog Blue. Students are proud of the Yale name and tradition and are willing to defend it to the death against Harvard and Princeton (their major rivals). This is most apparent during the Harvard-Yale weekend. In preparation for this surge of school spirit, students buy shirts and sunglasses saying "Harvard sucks, and Princeton doesn't matter," and they party in the name of Eli. Alumni flock to campus and nearly the entire student body goes out for "The Game" to cheer the football team to victory (or defeat) in New Haven or Boston.
  • 获得门票
You usually don't need to purchase tickets in advance for any event, as tickets are almost always available on-site 1.5 hours before the game. The big exception is "The Game" between Harvard and Yale the weekend before Thanksgiving (tickets must be pre-ordered). Admission is generally inexpensive.

    • The Yale Sustainable Food Project brings local, seasonal, and sustainable fare to Yale's dining tables. The project focuses on the complex relationship between people, the land, and their food. It partners with dining halls to use fruits and vegetables when they are in season and encourages the use of sustainable and organic resources, like organic milk and grass-fed burgers. Students can become involved by volunteering at the Yale Farm or taking classes sponsored by the project. Check out www.yale.edu/sustainablefood/index.html for more information.

    • The families of the Master and Dean live in the college in designated apartments. These families often eat in the college dining hall and even keep their pets in the college!
    • Master's Teas are offered by all of the residential colleges during the academic year. The college brings in an influential, famous, or just downright interesting person for students to listen to and ask questions of. Past Master's Tea guests have included Alec Baldwin, Jodie Foster, Denzel Washington, and Judy Blume, as well as world leaders in sustainability, international relations, journalism, and politics.
    • Though students are randomly assigned to residential colleges, if one of their relatives was or is in a particular residential college, students can choose to be or choose not to be assigned to that college.
    • Most freshmen live in the freshman dorm quad (known as "Old Campus") with other students from their particular college. These dorms are arranged into single-sex suites on single-sex floors that can accommodate four to six freshmen in the 10 buildings that make uip Old Campus, which is located directly in the center of the University. Each entrance to each hall has a different name (such as Lanman-Wright or Bingham) and can only be accessed by students who live in that entryway.

  • 学校俚语
    • Bass: Bass Library. This is the underground home of comfy armchairs and a great cafe (read: coffee). Frequented primarily by undergraduates. Open late into the evenings, and 24/7 during Reading Period!
    • Blue Book: Yale's "Bible" of class listings and descriptions. Your ultimate shopping period guide to academics. Note: Can also be used as a verb (ex: "I'm so tired, I've been bluebooking all night!").
    • D.S.: Directed Studies. Also known as Directed Suicide. This is a freshman program that comprises three of your classes every semester (philosophy, literature, and history/politics). Now when someone mentions Kant, you can say in all honesty, "Critique of Pure Reason? I hated Critique of Pure Reason!"
    • DUH: Acronym still used to refer to the old Department of University Health, even though they changed the name to University Health Services about 20 years ago. Have a stomach ache? According to these professionals, either you're pregnant or you're probably pregnant.
    • Durfee's run: A quick trip to Durfee Sweet Shoppe. This snack shop is located in the basement of Durfee on Old Campus. A great place to score late-night snacks, especially healthy or organic delicacies (as well as less-healthy alternatives).
    • Gut: An easy class that takes the stress out of a busy schedule. Beware, there are very few "gut" classes at Yale!
    • Legacy: A student who got into Yale because his or her parent or relative went here. (Now increasingly rare.)
    • Reading Period: A week with no classes during which students "prepare" for their finals. Usually a frantic combination of partying and paper writing.
    • Science Hill: The location of most science classes. A half-mile from Old Campus, this is God's way of punishing physics and bio-chemistry majors who would otherwise get no exercise.
    • Sexile: There are two people getting it on in your bedroom, and you are not one of them. Hope the couch is comfy.
    • Shopping Period: During the first two weeks of classes, Yale gives you the chance to preview potential classes without any commitment. Why do only four classes of reading when you can do fifteen? Still, it is a good opportunity to make sure your calculus teacher speaks English.
    • Spring Fling: During this campus-wide party the weekend before reading week, students blow off steam by basking in the sun and listening to famous bands like the Decemberists and Girl Talk.
    • The Stacks: Not only is this the dusty tower where you can get lost looking for books, it is also a choice location for romantic rendezvous.
    • Swing Space: Officially Boyd Hall. This relatively new dorm temporarily houses students while their colleges undergo renovations.
  • 传统
    • A Cappella Rush: "Rush" is the term for the whirlwind of events that ultimately leads up to Tap Night. Through concerts at Woolsey and Dwight halls, Yale's a cappella groups advertise themselves to new freshmen (and some upperclassmen). "Rushees" go through a series of auditions, call-backs, "Rush Meals," and "Singing Desserts" before they are tapped by groups that want them as members.
    • A Cappella Tap Night: On an undisclosed evening in October, all the members of Yale's a cappella groups gather at High Street Gate for the annual Tap Night. After performances by Whim 'n Rhythm and the Wiffenpoofs (Yale's senior female and male groups) and the dropping of a broom, groups rush Old Campus to "tap" new members into their group. The chaos and singing (there's a LOT) are exciting and memorable, even if you didn't Rush a cappella.
    • Class Day : During Class Day, the ceremony the day before Commencement, it is tradition for students to smoke a special tobacco out of a clay pipe and to wave good-bye to Yale with a white handkerchief. Today, students do this while wearing the silliest hats imaginable, which is a new tradition building on an old one.
    • Screws: Social occasions/dances organized by colleges in which suitemates set each other up on blind dates. Students often meet their dates through embarrassing situations, such as standing shirtless on Old Campus in the freezing cold holding a sign reading, "screw me, Martha." Most infamous is Freshmen Screw, although most colleges also hold Screws, as well.
    • Spring Fling: A day-long series of concerts on Old Campus by both Yale students and big name artists. Groups in 2009 included the Decemberists, N.E.R.D., and Girl Talk.
    • YSO Halloween concert: A Yalie-made silent film accompanied by music by the Yale Symphony Orchestra. Filmed on campus, the film is approximately an hour in length and features hilarious cameos by YSO musicians and Yale staff and faculty. It's one of the most popular social events of the year. Come to Woolsey in costume!
  • 校园传说
    • Many Yalies will quote, "All roads lead to Toad's." This is a reference to the popular concert and dance venue, Toad's Place, and may or may not be true. However, Toad's remains a cornerstone of the Yale party scene.
    • The basic idea for Federal Express was submitted as a term paper at Yale . . . and only got a C.
    • The Skull and Bones secret society boasts many members who later rose to power as part of the United States' political elite. Members have included William Howard Taft, John Kerry, Presidents Bush (father and son), and (fictionally) the Simpson's character Montgomery Burns. The society is reported to have the bones of Martin Van Buren, Geronimo, and Pancho Villa, although this has never been confirmed. The society was also the basis of the popular movies, "The Good Shepherd" and "The Skulls."
  • 最喜欢做的事情
Art shows. If you want to experience a slightly more upscale evening, there are often art show openings where you can rub elbows with Yale's "artsy" crowd while drinking wine and looking at some amazing work. Theater and drama productions. With at least one show every weekend, Yale theater scene is fantastic. You might just see the up-and-coming future stars of theater. Remember, both Meryl Streep and Jodie Foster graduated from Yale.

  • Alchemy Nightclub

Alchemy has three incredible clubs under one roof. One room is dedicated to the best of hip-hop on vinyl (yes, real vinyl). The second section is home to Connecticut's largest dance floor and a 30-foot-wide waterfall. The third section is Elevate Lounge and Event Space, located upstairs. Alchemy is easily one of the coolest places to dance in New Haven.

This lounge is more sophisticated and luxurious than its fellows and is a popular venue for college dances and Screws. • Richter's Café

Richter's is New Haven's oldest bar. While space can be a bit tight, it may be well worth the squeeze to sit back with one of Richter's legendary half-yard-tall glasses of beer. The food can be a bit pricey, but the Scotch and whiskey selection are very good. A great place to catch a game, too.

Rudy's is more of a New Haven bar than a Yale bar. Expect to rub elbows with nostalgic hippies and Yale-grads-turned-state-governors alike. The Anchor is one of New Haven's classic seedy bars and was reportedly one of Jodi Foster's favorite hangouts when she was a student. The food and drink are basic but pretty good (and budget friendly). It's really the atmosphere you're after: the crusty locals, mediocre waitstaff, and inexpensive fare equal your new favorite local place.
